The Russian Navy is in need of new oilers as the majority of those currently in service aren't young anymore.
The Vasiliy Nikitin is the second ship of a total of 6 planned of this class.
Construction is underway on two more at Nevsky, Admiral Kotov and Aleksey Shein.
