πŸš€ Ethereum's 2026 Expansion Through Zero-Knowledge Proofs Expected to Transform Blockchain Operations

According to BlockBeats, researchers and developers anticipate that 2026 will be a pivotal year for Ethereum as it leverages zero-knowledge proofs (ZK) to achieve exponential scaling. During this period, some Ethereum validators will transition from re-executing transactions to directly verifying ZK proofs, fundamentally altering blockchain operations. This shift is expected to be comparable in scale to Ethereum's 2022 transition from Proof of Work (PoW) to Proof of Stake (PoS), known as 'The Merge.'

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake has indicated that the initial validators will begin verifying ZK proofs for each block instead of re-executing all transactions. This approach will provide immediate scaling benefits for Layer 1 and lay the groundwork for achieving 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) in the future. Currently, the Ethereum mainnet processes approximately 30 TPS.

During Devconnect, Drake demonstrated that ZK proof verification could be performed using an old laptop, predicting that by the end of 2026, around 10% of validators will switch to the ZK verification mode, known as Lean Execution Phase 1. This transition is expected to significantly reduce hardware requirements for validation nodes while maintaining network decentralization.

Ethereum Besu client engineer Gary Schulte highlighted that future computationally intensive tasks will primarily be handled by block builders and ZK provers, allowing ordinary validators to perform lightweight checks. This development creates conditions for increasing the gas limit and overall throughput.

Ethereum's roadmap currently remains in Phase 0, which involves voluntary validation. It is projected to enter Phase 1 in 2026, where some validators will switch to ZK verification, and progress to Phase 2 in 2027, mandating block producers to generate ZK proofs for comprehensive ZK execution.

πŸš€ Vitalik Buterin Discusses Layered Understanding of Blockchain Scalability

Vitalik Buterin has shared his insights on the layered understanding of blockchain scalability. According to Odaily, he categorizes the difficulty of scaling blockchain components from easiest to hardest as computation, data, and state.

Buterin explains that computation is the easiest to scale, achievable through parallelization, using 'hints' provided by block builders, or replacing extensive computation with proofs like zero-knowledge proofs. Data scaling is moderately difficult, especially when systems require data availability guarantees. However, it can be optimized through data splitting, erasure coding methods like PeerDAS, and supporting 'graceful degradation,' allowing nodes with lower data capacity to still generate blocks of corresponding size.

In contrast, state is the most challenging aspect to scale. Buterin notes that even to verify a single transaction, nodes require the complete state. Even if the state is abstracted as a tree with only the root node saved, updating this root still depends on the complete state. Although there are methods to split the state, they often necessitate significant architectural changes and are not universally applicable.

Based on these observations, Buterin concludes that if data can replace state without introducing new centralization assumptions, it should be prioritized. Similarly, if computation can replace data without new centralization assumptions, it should be seriously considered.

πŸš€ Vitalik Buterin Emphasizes Self-Hosted Verification for Ethereum's Resilience

Vitalik Buterin has updated his perspective on the necessity for users to independently verify Ethereum's complete history. According to NS3.AI, Buterin now underscores the importance of maintaining a self-hosted verification fallback to ensure the network's resilience as modularization and state storage are minimized. Innovations such as zero-knowledge proofs, Verkle trees, and light clients are pivotal in facilitating verification without the need for full chain replay, thereby preserving trustlessness as execution clients decrease local data requirements.

πŸš€ Blockchain's Role in Enhancing AI Systems and Trust

The a16z crypto team has highlighted the potential of blockchain technology in addressing trust challenges posed by the scaling of AI systems. According to PANews, the internet currently lacks a native method to distinguish between humans and machines, which threatens the trust framework. Blockchain offers a solution through several key roles.

Firstly, it increases the cost of AI impersonation by using decentralized human authentication systems like World ID, which limits the scale of fake identity creation and raises attack costs. Secondly, blockchain enables decentralized identity verification, granting users control over their identities and avoiding single points of failure in centralized systems, while also enhancing privacy and censorship resistance.

Additionally, blockchain can create a universal 'passport' that allows AI agents to operate across platforms with permissions and payment information, improving interoperability and preventing lock-in effects. It also supports machine-scale payments through blockchain micropayments and smart contracts, facilitating low-cost, precise payment distribution for economic activities between machines.

Lastly, blockchain strengthens privacy protection by using zero-knowledge proofs, allowing users to verify their identity without exposing specific data, thus preventing AI from misusing information for impersonation.

a16z believes that blockchain is essential infrastructure for building an AI-native internet, capable of restoring trust and supporting the healthy development of AI systems.

πŸš€ Ethereum's Privacy Infrastructure Key to Institutional Adoption, Says Expert

Ethereum Foundation's Institutional Privacy Task Force (IPTF) technical lead, Oskar Thoren, emphasized the importance of privacy as a foundational element of Ethereum's infrastructure at the EthCC[9] conference. According to Foresight News, Thoren highlighted that a major challenge for institutions entering the Ethereum ecosystem is balancing the protection of business strategies and transaction privacy with increasingly stringent regulatory compliance requirements. Without comprehensive end-to-end privacy protection, Ethereum's potential as a global settlement layer could be limited.

Thoren elaborated on the three main research areas of the Ethereum Privacy Preserving (PSE) team: Private Writes, Private Reads, and Private Proving. Private Writes aim to align the cost and convenience of private transactions with regular ones, utilizing technologies like Plasma for confidential asset transfers. Private Reads focus on addressing data leakage issues in services such as RPC, enabling institutions to interact with on-chain data without revealing identity or query intent. Private Proving seeks to enhance the efficiency of generating and verifying zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP), supporting complex applications like confidential DeFi and provable identity.

πŸš€ Ethereum Foundation Researcher Unveils zkAttester Client Solution at EthCC[9]

Ethereum Foundation researcher Ladislaus von Daniels introduced the zkAttester client solution at the EthCC[9] conference. According to Foresight News, he highlighted that current Ethereum nodes are limited by the burden of re-executing computations. The zkAttester client allows validators to directly verify zero-knowledge proofs without re-executing all transactions within a block, significantly reducing the CPU performance requirements for nodes and enabling consumer-grade hardware to participate in network validation. By eliminating the re-execution step, the synchronization time for new nodes can be reduced from days or hours to minutes.

Ladislaus stated that this technology aligns closely with Ethereum's "The Verge" phase goals, which aim to replace heavy computational verification with ZK-SNARKs. This would enable lightweight verification on mobile devices, ultimately achieving large-scale expansion and a higher degree of decentralization for Ethereum's Layer 1.
