🚀 A16z Urges DOJ To Reconsider Accountability In DeFi Protocols

According to Odaily, venture capital firm a16z has expressed that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) should cease holding DeFi protocols accountable for unlawful activities they neither incited nor controlled. The firm emphasized that imposing responsibility on individuals for systems and activities beyond their control could lead to adverse outcomes. Unfortunately, the DOJ has overlooked this distinction, attempting to hold software developers accountable for third-party actions using neutral tools they initially created but no longer control.

A16z suggests that the new U.S. presidential administration's primary policy focus on cryptocurrency should be to legally define and understand 'control' accurately. This understanding is crucial for determining whether cryptocurrency companies qualify as 'money transmission businesses,' which are subject to specific regulations and obligations. According to its official website, a16z's investment portfolio includes over 100 cryptocurrency companies, such as decentralized exchanges like Uniswap.

🚀 SEC Commissioner Advocates for Privacy in Cryptocurrency Transactions

According to PANews, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Commissioner Hester Peirce emphasized the importance of protecting individuals' rights to privately trade cryptocurrencies. Her remarks come as the trial of Roman Storm, associated with Tornado Cash, nears its conclusion. Storm faces allegations that the mixing service was used for money laundering.

Peirce argued for the protection of privacy technologies and self-custody rights, asserting that developers should not be held accountable for how their software is used by others. She criticized the inefficacy of requiring open-source protocols to comply with financial regulations. Furthermore, Peirce highlighted that regulatory bodies should not mandate companies to record transaction parties, referencing the decentralized finance broker rules proposed during U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, which were later repealed.

If convicted, Storm could face up to 40 years in prison. His defense team and industry experts maintain that software developers should not be liable for the actions of users. In similar cases, the co-founder of Samourai Wallet has already pleaded guilty.

🚀 DeFi Advocates Urge Senate for Developer Protections in Market Legislation

According to Foresight News, the DeFi Education Fund, along with 115 crypto builders, investors, and advocates, has submitted a joint letter to the Senate Banking and Agriculture Committees. The letter calls for protections for software developers and non-custodial service providers in market structure legislation, emphasizing that without such protections, they cannot support any related market structure bills.

The letter highlights the need for U.S. digital asset legislation to recognize and protect the historical rights of open-source software development. It stresses that developers and non-custodial service providers should not be subjected to traditional financial intermediary regulations simply for creating, developing, releasing, and maintaining blockchain networks or providing user access interfaces where users manage their own funds. The aim is to prevent non-intermediary activities from being wrongly classified as money transmission businesses.

The letter also notes that regulatory uncertainty has led to a decline in the proportion of open-source software developers in the U.S., dropping from 25% in 2021 to 18% in 2025.

🚀 Impact of Tech CEOs' Race for Artificial General Intelligence on Consumers and Developers

Fred Hickey, editor of The High-Tech Strategist, posted on X about the ongoing competition among tech CEOs to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI). This pursuit has led to significant shortages in electronic components, particularly semiconductor memories. As these CEOs invest heavily in their quest, the average American consumer faces rising energy costs and increased prices for electronic devices such as PCs, smartphones, and TVs. Additionally, there are concerns about potential shortages of these products.

While the race for AGI promises advancements like improved search capabilities and faster coding for software developers, who constitute less than 0.4% of the U.S. population, it also raises fears of job losses. Despite ambitious claims of solving major global issues like cancer and achieving world peace, Hickey suggests that the public might benefit more if these CEOs focused on less consequential challenges, such as the proposed but unrealized UFC-style cage matches between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.

🚀 Coin Center Criticizes U.S. Government's Approach to Crypto Privacy Software Developers

Coin Center has expressed concerns over the U.S. government's handling of crypto privacy software developers, stating that the Trump administration has not fulfilled its promise to refrain from prosecuting these individuals. According to NS3.AI, the U.S. Department of Justice continues to pursue several cases, including the partial conviction of Ethereum developer Roman Storm. Coin Center argues that these actions contradict earlier assurances and could have broader implications for the development and use of privacy-focused technologies in the cryptocurrency sector.
