🚀 Decentralized AI Society Formed to Address AI Industry Monopolies

According to Odaily, a group of participants in the cryptocurrency industry has established a non-profit organization named the Decentralized AI Society (DAIS) to tackle potential monopolies in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. The group is led by Michael Casey, former Chief Content Officer at CoinDesk and Chairman of Consensus. The eight founding members of DAIS include CETI AI, Filecoin Foundation, Bloq, Hypercycle, Morpheus, Hemi, Odyssey, and Lumerin.

On Tuesday, during an interview at the Token2049 blockchain conference in Singapore, Casey stated, 'DAIS believes that centralized platforms in the AI era have a significant advantage. They possess all the data, computing power, and even regulatory bodies.' DAIS aims to address four key issues: bringing capital to the decentralized AI world, which has become an arms race for resources like GPUs and data centers; formulating policies to establish AI regulations; promoting education and awareness of decentralized AI; and engineering new algorithms for learning models in a distributed manner.

🚀 AI Startups Collaborate on Distributed Language Model Development

According to Foresight News, AI startups Flower AI and Vana have jointly launched a distributed large language model named Collective-1. This model operates on GPUs across multiple global locations, bypassing traditional data center dependencies, and incorporates private user data from platforms like X, Reddit, and Telegram. Currently, Collective-1 has 7 billion parameters, which is significantly smaller than leading models like ChatGPT and Claude. However, Flower AI is preparing to train a model with 30 billion parameters and plans to release a version with nearly 100 billion parameters within the year.

Flower AI has also collaborated with universities in China and the UK to develop the Photon tool, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of distributed training. This approach is expected to empower small and medium-sized enterprises and resource-limited countries to participate in foundational model development. Vana provides users with data authorization tools, allowing them to independently decide on data usage and benefit from associated rights. Experts believe this model could drive the AI industry towards a more open and decentralized direction.

🚀 Decentralized Training Gains Momentum in AI Development

According to Foresight News, Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic and former policy director at OpenAI, highlighted the significance of decentralized training in his weekly AI newsletter, Import AI. He emphasized that decentralized training enhances data privacy and system robustness by utilizing distributed learning across multiple nodes. Citing a study by Epoch AI, Clark noted that the computational scale of decentralized training is expanding at an annual rate of 20 times, significantly outpacing the fivefold growth rate of cutting-edge centralized training. Although decentralized training is currently about 1,000 times smaller than advanced centralized methods, it remains technically feasible and could potentially facilitate broader collaborative efforts to develop more powerful models.
