🚀 Meta Tests Facial Recognition To Combat Fake Celebrity Scam Ads

According to Cointelegraph, Meta, a social network company with nearly 4 billion users, is testing facial recognition technology to combat fake celebrity scam ads on its platforms. Early testing with a small group of celebrities has shown promising results, and the company plans to trial the technology with 50,000 celebrities and public figures in the coming weeks.

The system compares images in the ads against the celebrity’s Facebook and Instagram profile pictures to identify scams. If a match is confirmed and the ad is determined to be a scam, it will be blocked. Celebrities such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk, American TV host Oprah Winfrey, and Australian mining billionaires Andrew Forrest and Gina Rinehart have been impersonated in scam ads in the past.

Meta’s initiative is part of a broader crackdown against “celeb-bait” scams, where cyber criminals use sophisticated methods to steal personal information or money from victims. The company stated that this scheme violates its policies and is harmful to users. Meta will soon start sending in-app notifications to many targeted celebrities, informing them of their enrollment in the protection measure, with an option to opt-out.

However, Meta must proceed with caution following a recent $1.4 billion settlement with Texas for using personal biometric data without legal authorization. The company assured that it would immediately delete facial data generated when determining whether a celebrity ad is a scam. Additionally, facial recognition technology will be used to help people verify their identity and regain access to compromised accounts.

Despite the rise in crypto scam advertisements on Facebook, Meta refuted claims from Australia’s consumer regulator that nearly 60% of crypto investment schemes seen on Facebook were scams in August. Many victims are lured into these scams via AI-generated deepfakes.

🚀 Decentralized Identity Solutions: Challenges And Innovations

According to Cointelegraph, zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, a method of verifying information without revealing its specific contents, have gained popularity in creating decentralized identity products. However, Ingo Rübe, CEO and co-founder of KILT Protocol, highlighted the challenges in government and institutional adoption due to the technical complexity of ZK-proofs.

In an interview, Rübe explained that decentralized identifiers, such as biometric data, could be selectively shared and verified onchain using Merkle Trees. This method, understood by all computer scientists, offers greater ease, speed, and efficiency compared to ZK-proofs. He also warned that the open-source software commonly used in ZK solutions could pose a risk of massive data breaches, as companies often rely on third-party libraries without clear accountability.

Rübe emphasized the importance of using public permissionless blockchains to store credential validity, allowing users to own and create their digital identifiers, which are stored locally and verified through decentralized networks. The World Wide Web Consortium developed a standard for decentralized identity solutions in 2022, underscoring the growing interest in this field.

Despite the technical barriers, several entities are exploring ZK-powered identity solutions. In October 2024, Buenos Aires announced the rollout of decentralized identification for residents using ZKsync Era. Additionally, on October 17, World, formerly known as Worldcoin (WLD), introduced the next generation of biometric data-collecting orbs and the World ID Credentials program. This initiative will enable individuals with NFT-enabled government passports to register their identity in the World system.

Rübe noted that different approaches to decentralized identity solutions, including ZK-proofs, are suitable for various use cases. However, he likened the use of ZK-proofs for decentralized identity to “taking a bazooka and trying to kill a fly,” indicating that simpler methods might be more effective for certain applications.

🚀 Chilean Consumer Agency Demands Halt to Iris Scanning Activities

According to PANews, the Chilean consumer protection agency, SERNAC, has issued a notice to World (formerly Worldcoin) and Rappi, instructing them to cease iris scanning activities in the country. This action comes amid concerns over privacy and data handling practices associated with these activities.

Rappi has clarified that it signed a memorandum of understanding with World to conduct a pilot test for on-demand human verification services. This iris scanning initiative is planned to be trialed in Argentina in 2024, contrary to earlier speculations that it would take place in Chile. Despite this clarification, SERNAC has reported receiving several complaints related to World’s operations in Chile. These complaints include allegations of registering minors into the system, operators failing to disclose data handling practices, and the inability to remove data from the system.

The situation highlights ongoing concerns about privacy and data protection in the context of biometric data collection. SERNAC's intervention underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in handling sensitive personal information. The agency's actions reflect a broader global scrutiny of biometric data practices, emphasizing the need for companies to adhere to strict data protection standards to maintain consumer trust.

🚀 Brazil Halts Biometric Data Collection For Crypto Compensation

According to Cointelegraph, Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has mandated that Tools for Humanity (TFH), the company behind the World ID project's biometric technology, cease offering cryptocurrency or financial incentives for collecting biometric data from Brazilian citizens. This directive, effective from January 25, follows an investigation initiated in November after the World ID project's launch in Brazil.

The ANPD's enforcement division concluded that providing cryptocurrency as compensation could undermine the validity of user consent when collecting sensitive biometric data. World Network, co-founded in 2019 by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, utilizes iris biometrics developed by Tools for Humanity, based in San Francisco and Berlin, to create a universal digital identity and financial network through iris scanning technology.

Brazilian law stipulates that consent for processing sensitive personal data must be freely given, informed, unequivocal, and specifically for designated purposes. The ANPD expressed concerns that financial incentives might unduly influence individuals' decision-making, particularly those in vulnerable situations. Additionally, the authority highlighted the sensitive nature of biometric data, the irreversible nature of its collection, and the inability to delete such data once collected.

In a related development, Germany's data protection authority, BayLDA, issued corrective measures in December for the digital identity project, requiring World Network to comply with the EU's General Data Protection Regulations regarding biometric data handling.

The native token of the World Network, WLF, has experienced a decline of over 8% in the past 24 hours, falling below $2. Since its launch in July 2023, the token has decreased by 83% from its all-time high of $11.74 in March, as reported by CoinGecko.

🚀 World Faces Ban In Brazil Over Data Privacy Concerns

According to Odaily, World has been banned in Brazil following an appeal to the country's data regulatory authority that went unheeded. Last month, the Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) ordered action against the project due to concerns it might influence consumer behavior. The guidelines emphasize that consent for processing biometric data must be 'free, informed, and explicit.' There are also worries that sensitive information collected from the public cannot be deleted later, as consumers cannot revoke consent.

World had requested 45 days to modify its application and cease offering economic compensation, but this request was denied. The regulatory body suggested that World could simply delay iris scan appointments until necessary changes were implemented. World has been given 10 business days to formally confirm the suspension of cryptocurrency payments.

In a statement, World expressed respect for the ANPD's decision and stated that its stores in Brazil would remain open to provide education and information to the public. The company apologized to consumers wishing to join the program but emphasized its commitment to complying with the laws of the markets in which it operates.
