CORRUGATED CARDBOARD OR CORRUGATED BOARD?
A BRUSSELS STORY

Finally, the situation has become clear…

The European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers (FEFCO) succeeded in securing a full exemption for corrugated packaging from the mandatory reuse targets in the PPWR regulation.

But apparently, the bureaucrats in Brussels struggled greatly with one simple question:

What exactly is “corrugated board”?

I can almost imagine the conversation:

— “Why do you insist on saying corrugated board? Why this complication? Just call it cardboard. It’s basically cardboard, only corrugated in shape, right?”...

FROM WOODEN PALLETS TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

A few years ago, at ixs-pal®, we set ourselves an ambitious goal in the field of sustainability: to replace traditional wooden pallets with corrugated pallets.

Not only within the corrugated packaging industry — but across all industries that rely on corrugated packaging.

Our vision is simple and bold at the same time. We believe wooden pallets do not belong in single-use logistics loops. They belong in the furniture industry, where wood can live a second life — transformed into beautiful tables, chairs, and café interiors, not broken pallets sent to waste. ..

I NEED YOUR HELP: LET’S TURN REAL CORRUGATED CASES INTO GAME MECHANICS)

For the past months, my team and I have been developing CORRUGA EMPIRE — an educational business simulation game dedicated entirely to the corrugated packaging industry - www.corrugaempire.com

The goal is simple but ambitious: to help people understand how the corrugated industry really works — through equipment, materials, orders, risks, and decisions — by turning real industrial logic into game mechanics.

One of the key elements of the game is the Marketing Cards deck.

What are Marketing Cards?..

THE VITRUVIAN AQUEDUCT
— OR WHY CORRUGATED BOARD IS ARCHITECTURE IN ITS PUREST FORM

You’ve probably heard of the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci — the human figure inscribed in a circle and a square, a symbol of perfect proportion.
But fewer people remember that the original Vitruvian was Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, the Roman architect and engineer.

Vitruvius was obsessed with the golden balance — the ideal relationship between form, material, and strength.
And he was one of the first to define the ideal shape of the arch not theoretically, but physically.

He would hang a rope or a chain between two points, let gravity draw its natural curve, and then trace that arc.
What nature created effortlessly became the most efficient architectural form.
This curve — the catenary — was not decoration.
It was pure structural truth...

INVESTOR FOCUS: WHAT GREIF’S SCHEDULE CORRECTION SIGNALS TO THE CORRUGATED AND PACKAGING MARKET

At first glance, the correction to the earnings announcement schedule issued by Greif, Inc. for Q1 FY2026 may appear purely technical. However, for investors, suppliers, and professionals across the paper, corrugated board, and industrial packaging sectors, such updates carry clear signaling value.

First, Greif is a publicly traded global player with a broad base of institutional investors, and any adjustment in its investor-relations calendar inevitably draws closer market attention. Second, Q1 FY2026 is particularly important against the backdrop of moderating industrial activity, ongoing demand volatility in packaging, and sustained pressure on margins in paper-based segments... https://corruga.expert/news/investor-focus-what-greif-s-schedule-correction-signals-to-the-corrugated-and-packaging-market/

CORRUGATED BOARD BREAKS INTO THE HIGHEST-VALUE SEGMENT

Navigation and radar equipment for yachts and commercial vessels is, without exaggeration, one of the most valuable product categories currently shipped in corrugated packaging. The price of a single navigation or radar module can easily reach tens of thousands of dollars, while transportation safety requirements are extreme.

In collaboration with DS Smith, a fully recyclable corrugated packaging system was developed, specifically engineered for Raymarine’s radar product portfolio...

IF YOU ARE PLANNING A NEW CORRUGATED PLANT FOR 2026–2030, THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD BE LISTENING TO

If you are planning a new corrugated plant for the 2026–2030 horizon, there is one signal from the market that should not be ignored.
It was articulated very clearly by Alfio Brandi, the new Business Development Director of Emmepi Group, when the company officially presented its Vertical Warehouse strategy. What Brandi outlined was not a product launch, but a shift in how future corrugated factories should be designed, structured, and scaled...

MORE THAN AN EXHIBITION: WHY BUENOS AIRES IS BECOMING A STRATEGIC HUB FOR THE LATIN AMERICAN CORRUGATED INDUSTRY

Latamcorr Argentina will take place on May 13–14, 2026, at the Hilton Hotel, Buenos Aires.

We spoke with Susan Reyes (Susan Ortega), President and Business Developer of LatamCORR, about why this event matters — and why Latin America is one of the most dynamic corrugated markets in the world today.

"LatamCORR was born as a natural extension of our long-running Latampaper events. Over time, it became clear that the corrugated industry needed its own technical, plant-oriented platform — one focused less on scale and more on real operational discussions. Buenos Aires was a natural choice, thanks to Argentina’s strong corrugated base and its role as a regional connector for Latin America...

TUGCE AYAR: STRUCTURAL THINKING AND THE AESTHETICS OF CORRUGATED BOARD

Corruga.expert came across a series of original corrugated board works and decided to learn more directly from the artist about her sculptural approach, material logic, and creative practice.

“While I am originally from Turkey and deeply influenced by its historical and architectural heritage — which inspired my Bosphorus Bridge scale model — I am currently based in Canada, where my professional practice continues.”
— Tugce Ayar

Previously based in Istanbul, Turkey, Tugce Ayar developed her practice in a cultural environment where engineering, architecture, and history constantly interact. This context shaped her strong interest in load-bearing systems, structural logic, and the way materials behave under stress..

GREEN BAY PACKAGING’S $1B PROJECT POWERPACK: A TRANSFORMATIONAL MOVE IN THE CORRUGATED INDUSTRY

Green Bay Packaging (GBP), one of the United States’ largest and most vertically integrated fiber-based packaging companies, has launched a landmark investment exceeding $1 billion into modernizing and expanding its Arkansas Kraft paper mill in Morrilton, Arkansas. Known as Project PowerPack, this multi-year initiative broke ground in June 2025 and is slated for completion in the first half of 2028.

At a time when many mills are closing or reducing capacity, GBP’s expansion represents a counter-cyclical strategic investment — doubling production capacity while setting new standards in sustainability and energy efficiency...

INTERNATIONAL PAPER TO SPLIT INTO TWO PUBLIC COMPANIES

What the Future North American IP and the New EMEA Packaging Company Will Represent in Real Production Terms

International Paper has announced its plan to separate into two independent publicly traded companies, effectively dividing its North American operations from its EMEA packaging business. Beyond the financial headline, the industrial question is far more important: what production base, in real tonnage and corrugated output, will each company control?

The separation is expected within approximately 12–15 months and reflects diverging regional dynamics between North America and Europe in demand cycles, regulatory pressure, sustainability policy, and capital allocation strategy...

WHEN EXPERIENCE MATTERS MORE THAN SCALE

Why Machine Relocation Has Become an Art Form in the Premium Equipment Market

For several months, I’ve been asking our Lithuanian friends — Tadas Salkauskas and the team at MachineryAssist — to share the stories I had heard from them firsthand.

Not because they are entertaining (although they are), but because they are useful. Useful to everyone who works with heavy, complex, and especially premium-class equipment...

“CARDBOARD IS NOT JUST TRASH — IT’S A CANVAS”

Japanese artist Monami Ohno transforms corrugated cardboard into art “Cardboard may seem like just trash, but if you look closely, it has many possibilities.”
— Monami Ohno

Japanese artist and sculptor Monami Ohno is internationally known for her highly detailed sculptures made entirely from used cardboard boxes. Working with one of the most familiar packaging materials, she transforms everyday material into complex three-dimensional artworks that visually resemble metal, plastic or industrial objects.

Ohno studied 3D animation at Osaka University of Arts, where she first began experimenting with cardboard during a student project. What started as a simple exercise developed into a distinctive artistic practice in which cardboard became her primary medium...

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY YEARS: METSÄ BOARD REPORTS A LOSS AND SUSPENDS DIVIDENDS. WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN?

The latest financial report from Metsä Board has triggered serious discussion across the global paper and packaging industry.

For the first time in many years, the company reported a negative comparable operating result of EUR -80.2 million (-4.5% of sales), down from EUR 69.0 million (3.6%) in 2024. Net sales totaled EUR 1,775.7 million, a decline from EUR 1,938.6 million the previous year. The Board of Directors proposed not to distribute dividends for 2025, with earnings per share at EUR -0.44.

SIGNIFICANT REINFORCEMENT AT CGP BERRY, SAINT-GEORGES-SUR-MOULON — A STRATEGIC STEP WITH TCY NB5 SMART FLEXO

“We were not looking for just another casemaker. Our target was 12,000–15,000 sheets per hour in stable production, handling board grades from lightweight singlewall up to heavy doublewall, with a maximum format above 1,600 mm.
We needed precision slotting, tight folding tolerances, fast job changeovers, and consistent flexo registration at industrial speed. That combination defined our specification — and that is why we selected the TCY NB5 Smart Flexo.”
— Frédéric Froissart, Directeur Général, CGP BERRY

At its facility in Saint-Georges-sur-Moulon, CGP BERRY, part of CGP Coating Innovation, has commissioned a TCY NB5 Smart Flexo converting line — integrating multi-color flexo printing, slotting, die-cutting, creasing and folding in one synchronized system... https://corruga.expert/news/significant-reinforcement-at-cgp-berry-saint-georges-sur-moulon-a-strategic-step-with-tcy-nb5-smart-flexo/
THE END OF VOLUME? WHY SMURFIT WESTROCK AND KLABIN RESULTS SIGNAL A STRUCTURAL SHIFT IN THE CORRUGATED INDUSTRY

The real story is not growth — it is discipline

Smurfit Westrock and Klabin may have just delivered one of the most important signals the corrugated industry has seen in years. Not explosive expansion. Not collapse. But something far more consequential: a deliberate shift away from volume and toward control.

For decades, containerboard producers operated in cycles defined by expansion. When demand grew, capacity followed. When demand slowed, excess tons flooded the market, pushing prices down and squeezing margins across the entire value chain. This volatility became part of the industry’s DNA...
