"DA CUKUP LAH!"

This post will wrap up the largely euphoric sentiment following our 2-2 draw with China last night (21/3) at Kallang.

One can sympathise with the players for their joy when Jacob Mahler levelled the game, especially after a tumultuous period under Takayuki Nishigaya, the former coach. It was like a huge relief, finally being able to breathe properly.

Although Nishigaya's successor, Tsutomu Ogura, was quick to express his displeasure at that celebration, which resulted in one of the corner flags being damaged in the process, during the post-match assessment after his first game in charge.

In his opinion, the former Japanese assistant coach felt the celebration was premature while the game was still ongoing.

I am sure the same message was relayed to the team immediately after the game in the dressing room.

I am not sure if this result can be compared with that famous goalless draw with Japan years ago that had praises for the unexpected result sung for days, in my opinion, on an exaggerated scale.

The good thing is, most of us seem to be level-headed this time around, probably because we all know we still have a long way to go before we see the light at the end of the tunnel.

"COME AND FIGHT" TO BE IN OGURA'S RADAR

Is it too early to conclude anything from just two games after Tsutomu Ogura took charge?

Probably in some cases but judging from the sentiments from the public, things are looking positive when fans lauded the performances of the Singapore national team after their two recent World Cup Qualifying matches against China.

Despite having drew 2-2 at home before losing 4-1 away to the Chinese, the Lions put up spirited displays against the team that is ranked 88th on FIFA ranking (as in the time of writing).

The wild celebration ignited by Jacob Mahler's equaliser at Kallang on 21st March was matched by the fist clenching moment for the soft penalty given to the Chinese in Tianjin that resulted the hosts to take the lead and propelled them to a face-saving win.

Both The Straits Times and CNA praised the performance of the Lions in spite of the defeat in third largest municipality of China.

"The Lions put up a brave performance against China in the Group C World Cup qualifier in Tianjin but were ultimately undone by a controversial second-half penalty and wayward defending as the hosts clinched a 4-1 victory" wroted the broadsheet in their post-match assessment.

Meanwhile, the Mediacorp news channel opined "It was a scoreline that did not truly reflect a largely gritty display from Singapore, but football is a cruel game."

Such a compliment was rarely heard of during the time of Takayuki Nishigaya, Coach Ogura's predecessor, who was subjected to intense scrutiny from all parties since his first day in office.

If the present consensus on Coach Ogura is an indication of any kind, it could mean the faith on Singapore national team can be restored soon if things are remain on the right trajectory.

As the start of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) approaches, I am hopeful that the recent performances of the Lions under Coach Ogura will motivate and inspire other eligible players to compete for a spot to join the team at Kallang Football Hub for the upcoming qualifying matches in June.

LIONS LEARN HARD LESSONS IN JAPAN FRIENDLIES

The Singapore national team wrapped up their training camp in Japan with one win and two defeats to the J1 clubs they sparred with.

Apart from the 2-1 victory over Tokyo Verdy, the club where Lions coach Tsutomo Ogura worked as assistant manager prior to his appointment to the current role in early February, the four-time ASEAN champions succumbed to heavy losses to FC Tokyo (4-0) and Yokohama F. Marinos (7-1).

PREPARING FOR THE AFF MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC CUP

The motive of the camp is to gear the team up for the upcoming AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup, which is scheduled to commence on 8 December.

The outcome of these friendlies should not be surprising, given the wide gulf in footballing standards between the Republic and Asia's number one.

REALITY CHECK FOR THE LIONS

This notion was fittingly expressed by Coach Ogura in his assessment with The Straits Times when he told the broadsheet: "Before this, they (Singapore) had a feeling of how big the gap was between them and J1 teams, but this became real for them when they actually played."

Some may argue and find it difficult to understand why the Lions did not schedule games against other national sides in order to accumulate some points to push their FIFA ranking during the international break. I believe matches against the Japanese clubs are probably what the Lions have been lacking in recent years.

CHALLENGES OF LOW FIFA RANKING

With due respect to those recent opponents they played, how much experience can the Lions gain from the likes of Papua New Guinea and Guam compared to the reality check offered by the Japanese clubs?

Furthermore, given the low ranking of where we are now (FIFA ranking 161st), it should not be surprising that some national teams would not find us an attractive option in their bid to enhance their ranking at this point.

At a time when many clamour for us to play against stronger opponents in order to improve, haven’t we just done that?
