Payment giant Western Union (WU) collaborates with Stellar (XLM) Thunes so that WU customers can transfer funds directly to mobile wallets around the world. The development was announced in an official press release published on March 21.
🔽Thunes is the recently renamed trade name of TransferTo, a cross-border payment network focused on emerging markets. Previously, TransferTo collaborated with the open source Stellar project to experience the integration of blockchain-based calculations into its services.
✅ According to the Western Union press release, the partnership with Thunes will focus on providing the ability to use the WU digital network or WU agent locations to transfer funds directly to the recipients' mobile wallets.
Western Union emphasizes that this expanded functionality is aimed at stimulating financial accessibility worldwide by facilitating access to financial resources for under-secured banks - and for all who are not currently supported by traditional financial service providers.
☝️ Recently, Western Union has indicated that it is more susceptible to blockchain-based digital currencies. The president of WU Global Money Transfer stated that if cryptocurrencies will become a recognized means of exchange between individuals and businesses, the company will “be ready to launch” support.
In addition to cryptographic protection, Western Union is already exploring the use of blockchain technology, participating in current tests with Ripple, in order to find out the cost and time effectiveness of the settlement system based on the Ripple blockchain.
