Cihan Albay, IT leader of the Asian BMW Group Asian Technical Office, introduced the VerifyCar application - a “digital passport of the car on the blockchain,” which was developed in collaboration with VeChain, a blockchain start-up focused primarily on supply chain management.
VerifyCar addresses the problem of odometer fraud, a widespread problem in Germany, where 33% of used cars manipulate odometers. The estimated average economic effect of this practice is up to 3,000 euros per vehicle, which results in a total loss of about 6 billion euros per year.
🖋According to Albay, the VerifyCar application has already been tested with internal vehicles, adding that BMW currently determines how to release a product.
VeChain was part of the BMW Startup Garage, a four-month cooperation program aimed at developing appropriate solutions for the German car manufacturer. Albay said the two companies have been working together for over a year.
