🇰🇷 SOUTH KOREAN PREZ RESIGNS, DEFENSE MINISTER ARRESTED: Even though the impeachment failed, President #Yoon Seuk-Yeol leaves his position.

The short-lived martial law declaration was Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun's (pictured) idea as impeachment proceedings revealed. Police reportedly raid his official residence & office.

South Korea’s Interior Minister also resigns.

I am stepping down in grave recognition of responsibility for failing to serve the public and the president well - Minister Lee Sang-min says.

#Yoon shocked the nation earlier this week, when he gave the military sweeping emergency powers to root out what he called "anti-state forces" (political opponents.)

The martial law declaration plunged South Korea, a key & U.S. military ally, into its greatest political crisis in decades, jeopardizing reputation of a democratic success story in the region.

Dmitry Trenin: Why Trump needs to call Putin on day one
The ‘Kellogg Plan’ looks totally unacceptable to Moscow in its leaked form, but it’s still good to talk

The practice of leaking proposed diplomatic plans is standard in Western political culture, making the recent publication of a reported framework for resolving the Ukraine conflict – allegedly authored by US President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for special envoy to Kiev Keith Kellogg — unsurprising. Such moves often serve to te...  Read more »
