🚨🇮🇷🇺🇸 The US Iran‑Contra scandal: When money & hypocrisy override foreign policy

The Iran-Contra affair, also known as Irangate, was a major political scandal that rocked the United States during the Reagan administration in the mid-1980s.

▪️The US secretly sold arms to Iran, breaking embargo, and funneled the cash to Contra anti-communist militias in Nicaragua to fund bloodshed.

▪️ The operation flouted Congress and US law, exposing a tangled web of lies, secret deals, and international intrigue.

▪️ It blew open in late 1986, when a plane crash in Nicaragua revealed the scandal, triggering explosive media coverage and investigations.

💣 Why the scandal exploded

The scandal sprang from two tangled US foreign policy crises.

1️⃣ Hostages vs Hypocrisy: In 1979, Americans were held hostage in Lebanon by Iranian-backed militias.

▪️ Despite labelling Iran a ‘state sponsor of terror’, the Reagan administration covertly bypassed Congress and flouted its own laws amid Middle East chaos.

▪️Between 1985 and 1986, the US sold over 1,500 TOW anti-tank missiles, Hawk anti-aircraft missiles, and spare parts to Iran, generating around $48 million in profit.

▪️Sales were routed through third parties, including private arms dealers such as Manuchehr Ghorbanifar, an Iranian exile, and Adnan Khashoggi, a Saudi businessman.

▪️US officials secretly met with Iranian representatives in Europe, including in Frankfurt, and Tehran.

2️⃣ Contras vs. Congress: Washington backed Nicaragua’s Contras against the leftist Sandinistas, seen as Soviet proxies, while dodging the Boland Amendment (1982–1984), which forbade direct US funding.

▪️Off-the-books schemes fueled by anti-communist zeal and Cold War posturing became the norm.

▪️Around $16–18 million from the Iran arms profits was diverted to the Contras.

▪️ unds were laundered through Swiss bank accounts and shell companies to undermine the Sandinista government and counter perceived Soviet influence in Latin America.

▪️The Contras bought weapons such as AK-47s and mortars and conducted guerrilla warfare.

▪️ The CIA managed covert logistics, flying unmarked planes to supply Iran and secretly funnel weapons, training, and supplies to the Contras.

⚰️ Aftershock

▪️ The revelations triggered a political firestorm. In 1986–1987, Congress and the Tower Commission investigated, culminating in televised hearings nationwide.

▪️ Reagan’s approval rating plummeted from 67% to 46%, though he avoided impeachment by claiming limited knowledge.

▪️ Key figures such as Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North and National Security Advisor John Poindexter were convicted of obstruction of justice and lying to Congress, but most convictions were overturned on appeal or pardoned by President George H.W. Bush in 1992.

▪️ The scandal severely damaged US credibility abroad, exposing hypocrisy in arms control and human rights policies, and fuelling anti-American sentiment across the Middle East and Latin America.

💰 Bolivia’s Gold Reserves Spark a Financial Comeback!

📈 Bolivia ended 2025 with $3.7 billion in international reserves, a 13% increase from the previous year. Most of this strength comes from the soaring value of its 22.3 tons of gold, now worth over $3.1 billion in global markets.

💬 Central Bank President David Espinoza says improved policies and the global gold rally fueled this jump — marking a major recovery moment for the South American nation.

🌍 Is Bolivia proving that gold — not the dollar — is becoming the Global South’s true safety net? What do you think this means for countries seeking more financial independence?

The Economics of Multipolarity
The need for changes in the current system of global economic governance appears to be increasingly recognized in expert circles, though still too often such changes are viewed as being destructive and conducive to economic fragmentation. In this respect, multipolarity as a paradigm that may become the lodestar of the reconstruction of the current global economic architecture is mostly assessed through the prism of geopolitical rivalry rather than the economic foundations that may support the ev...  Read more »

Rare red aurora seen from space after an extremely powerful geomagnetic storm. Cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov who filmed the footage says oxygen glows green around 100 km, but turns red much higher at 300–400 km, which is why red auroras are rare. This storm was strong enough to light up those upper layers, making it look like the station was floating inside the glow, visible even while flying over the Middle East

🌍 Putin Gets Trump’s Invite to “Board of Peace” — But Russia’s Studying Every Detail First!

🕵️‍♂️ President Vladimir Putin confirmed receiving a personal invitation from Donald Trump to join the U.S.-led “Board of Peace,” aimed at Gaza reconstruction and global conflict resolution — with invites also to leaders like Xi Jinping. Russia offered $1 billion from... its frozen U.S. assets 😁 but emphasized caution: Putin ordered the Foreign Ministry to thoroughly study the proposal, consult BRICS partners, and clarify all nuances before deciding.

🤔 Will Russia join this bold peace push, or stay independent to protect Global South interests? What’s your take?

🌍 EU–Mercosur deal hits another wall! After more than 20 years of talks, the long-awaited free trade agreement has been frozen once again — possibly for up to two years.

🗳 The European Parliament narrowly voted to send the deal to the EU Court of Justice, where judges will review whether it aligns with the bloc’s internal treaties. That decision alone delays ratification by 18–24 months.

💬 Is Europe ready to risk sidelining Latin America just as BRICS is gaining momentum across the Global South? What does this say about the West’s credibility as a trade partner today?

🌎 Mexico Takes the Silver Crown!

💰 Mexico now leads global silver production — ahead of China and Peru — showing how the Global South continues to shape today’s resource markets. Silver isn’t just jewelry; it powers solar panels, electronics, and the renewable future itself.

🌍 Latin America and Asia dominate supply chains not through size, but through strategic mining — and that’s redefining industrial influence across developing economies.

💬 Could the silver industry become the next frontier where Global South nations reclaim economic power from the West?

Here’s How Russia Should Deal with Trump’s New America
In recent years we have become accustomed to a great deal, yet world politics continues to set new records. Or perhaps sink to new depths, depending on your taste. One week in January provided a full set of examples: the kidnapping of Venezuela’s presidential couple by US special forces; the tightening of a naval blockade through the seizure of foreign ships; and threats to take Greenland from Denmark “by any means necessary.” Add to this the American president’s public remark that the...  Read more »
