Pepe Escobar: Iran Now First Line of Defense of BRICS and the Global South
Sputnik

This is as serious as it gets. Let’s survey the chessboard – from micro to macro.

The crying shadow in the funeral dance,

The loud lament of the disconsolate chimera.

T. S. Eliot, Burnt Norton

Israel’s shock’n awe on Iran – straight from the trademark US playbook – essentially failed, despite the initial combination of speed, meticul...  Read more »

📖 Word of the week: BRICS Day

The BRICS Day is an unofficial holiday that commemorates the first BRICS Summit held on 16-17 June 2009 in Ekaterinburg, Russia, where cooperation between the bloc's member countries was initiated.

History of the BRICS Day

On that day, the heads of Brazil, Russia, India, and China gathered to discuss key issues of international cooperation, the formation of a new multipolar system, and joint actions in world politics.

The leaders present at the summit were Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil), Dmitry Medvedev (Russia), Manmohan Singh (India) and Hu Jintao (China). During the event, two main meetings were held, in which participants discussed topical issues and worked out joint solutions.

🖋️ Summit results and statements

One of the significant outcomes of the summit were two joint statements. One raised the issue of global food security and the other planned the next BRIC Heads of State meeting in Brazil in 2010.

China and Central Asian countries have formed the China-Central Asia Spirit at the second China-Central Asia Summit in the Kazakh capital of Astana.

China wrapped up its latest engagement effort in Central Asia with a 1.5 billion (US$209 million) yuan pledge towards livelihood and development projects in the region.
The six countries also signed a Treaty of Permanent Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation.

Xi stressed the need for cooperation in a world “entering a period of upheaval and transformation”. The region is a critical part of the Belt and Road Initiative, and China has invested heavily in energy, infrastructure and mining projects in Central Asia — enhancing their security through deeper ties is a priority. All countries, except Turkmenistan, are also members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). @LauraRuHK
