A: miscarry,
B: spontaneously abort,
C. poison a baby via her breast milk
D: Have babies that have cognitive difficulties.

These aren’t just words embroidered on a pillow at your nana’s house, I believe they’re the key to true, unshakable happiness. Nothing outside you can bring you unshakable happiness, only the application of these principles can do that. The “unshakable” bit is my favorite part, it means that with these things (which are accessible at all times to every human being) we can weather any storm and be happy through it. We don’t have to suffer. Let’s face it, most of what’s going on in our external world these days is absolute shit, and if we believe external circumstances are the source of joy, then our joy will only ever be fleeting, at BEST. Even when you know all of this it’s still not easy to put it into practice. But here’s your reminder (and my reminder to myself) to continue to work at it. I’m not a mantra kind of girl, but if I was, mine would contain all these words.
All of them are important, but I’ve noticed in my life I go through phases where my focus is turned heavily towards one. The first was honor. I’ll never forget a late night conversation I had with my mom when I was a teenager (after she busted me sneaking out of the house) where she broke down the importance of honor and how no one can be truly happy if they don’t live with honor. In a way, this conversation was a massive part of my awakening, it cracked me open and caused me to look at the world differently. That night, way way back in the late 1900s, honor became my Northstar.
Love is an obvious one. Although there are many types of love other than romantic love, falling in love tends to be the thing that shows most people the power of love for the first time. This was true for me. And though you might never pick up on it by talking to me because I’m ultra guarded (and kind of a dick), deep down I’m an absolute sap for love. The trick for me has been learning how to demonstrate it outwardly, love doesn’t do anyone any good if you keep it to yourself.
Currently my focus is on grace. It’s a word I had a superficial understanding of, but the more I delve into what it actually IS and what it can do, the more I rate it up there with love and honor. Grace is a sanctuary from which miraculous solutions are born, it holds space for the seemingly impossible to manifest in dazzling (and often times humorous) ways. Grace is strength and peace. It’s an alternative path to the one-dimensional justice we feel necessary to demand when someone has wronged us. It is the honor and dignity you grant yourself that never has to rely on anything external, only your own will. It’s the righteous opportunity you offer others to better themselves of their own volition, which is the ultimate resolution. Currently I would say my life is running the “Grace Simulation” teaching me the importance of all of this, and I’m happy to say the lesson has been received.
As I said before, understanding these concepts and putting them to use are 2 totally different things. But I do think what will save us, both individually and collectively, is putting emphasis back on these values. Despite everything, we can still find unshakable happiness. Let’s make love, appreciation, faith, honor, integrity, compassion and grace great again. ♥️
