Behind Big John’s Beer: When Old Horses Find Their Way Back to Themselves 🐎💗

For those who visited Colby’s Crew rescue centre, Big John seemed like a distinguished old gentleman enjoying a luxurious retirement. The enormous draft horse had a morning and evening ritual that never failed to surprise first-time visitors: a can of beer in the morning, another in the evening, along with relaxing massages to soothe his tired muscles.

Yet behind that unusual scene was something more meaningful. Big John’s enthusiasm for beer was not simply a publicity stunt, nor was it merely an eccentric preference.

In traditional veterinary practice, beer, particularly dark beer rich in barley malt, has long been used as a supplementary health treatment for working horses. Horses have a specialised hindgut fermentation system, and natural brewer’s yeast can provide B vitamins that may support appetite and digestive function.

A pelican, around 37 years old, shows up every day at a Greek restaurant to get its portion of fish. The bird has become a well-known local figure along the seafront.
