The first 2 Antarctic expeditions, Little America 1 & 2, were Masonic Expeditions. They were organized and financed by Freemasons.

In the 2nd Antarctic expedition of 1933-35, 60 of the 82 members were Freemasons and on February 5, 1935 Richard Byrd established First Antarctic Masonic Lodge No. 777. En: Antarctic Lodge No. 777

Byrd even established his own Masonic Order, which was named Order of the Penguin. Any expeditions members who were NOT Freemasons were required to join to the order upon passing the Antarctic Circle at 66.6° South.
