The Dome That Holds the Sky
The dome of the Pantheon isn’t just the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. It’s the shape it holds that matters. A perfect hemisphere, 43.3 meters across and 43.3 meters high, it forms a complete sphere if mirrored below—an invisible whole, with the oculus as its single open point. Light enters through that center, moving across the interior like the hand of a clock, tracking the hours without numbers.
It mimics more than the heavens—it enacts them. The proportions follow a quiet geometry: circles, squares, golden ratios embedded in the structure. The coffers reduce in size as they rise, drawing the eye upward, softening the weight. The oculus remains unglazed, open to the sky. Rain falls through it. So does sunlight. And in that design, something is preserved: a conduit between above and below.
The Pantheon was dedicated to all gods, but its dome suggests more than reverence. It reflects a knowledge of form, scale, and energy—how shape directs force, and how space can be made to speak.

🇬🇧 The well of Darvaza or "Hell's Gate" has been burning for decades
This 230 ft (70 m) wide and 100 ft (30 m) deep pit in north-central Turkmenistan is formally known as the the Darvaza pit or crater (named after a nearby village), but its nickname best describes the phenomenon: a methane hole that ignited decades ago in a remote area of the Karakum desert and has been burning ever since.
No one knows what the most likely origin is, but there are several stories with similar plot elements: Sometime between the 1960s and 1980s, Soviet engineers (possibly oil prospectors) were drilling in the area when the earth crumbled beneath them, opening a geological wound that would unleash a methane maelstrom.
Perhaps the engineers turned on the methane gas in the hope that it would be consumed quickly. Maybe someone threw away a cigarette and accidentally started the fire. Be that as it may, a seemingly unbreakable pyre was lit that emits a number of harmful pollutants, but since the nearest village was razed to the ground in 2004, there are no locals who are bothered by it.
The fact that the Darvaza crater has been burning unguarded for decades is peculiar, and it almost certainly started as a Cold War-era industrial accident.
The Darvaza crater also has a strange mythical status within Turkmenistan thanks to its former ruler, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow. There was a time when people thought he had died and he proved that he was still alive by taking a rally car to Darvaza and skidding around it.
