Why I became a radiologist?
My name is Dr Ashenafi Regasa, MD, Radiologist. currently working in St.Peter's Specialized
Hospital .
When I was practicing medicine at Gonder College of medicine and health science as an intern,
during my pediatric attachment, lencountereda child with diagnosis of disseminated TB to
lung, pleura and pericardium. He stayed inthe ward for more than two months with on and off
type of shortness of breath and fever. I tried to figure out the management of the case and
consulted a senior radiologist and gave me clear picture of huge pericardial fluid with help of
chest x -ray and chest ultrasound, and told me actually to do therapeutic pericardial tap by
locating where to pierce. By that time the patient was critical, and I did the tap successfully
since it is huge and occupied almost the whole chest, drained abscess from pericardial space
and the child got relief for the moment. Then l go back to the radiologist and we did guided
pericardial abscess drainage but it recurred then l consulted a surgeon for pericardiotomy and
he was operated, discharged with complete resolution of symptoms
And another case came with malnutrition who is an eight months old child first born to the
parents who made me to think unlikely to be from poor feeding. The child has repeated
vomiting as the mother told me. So we sent for neck x - ray which actually showed neck mass.
Then we decided to do CT with senior consultation and teratoma was the diagnosis which for
she had surgical rermoval of the mass, the child got improved gained weight and discharged.
With those two cases and many others I started really getting interested in radiology since it
has pivotal role for patients diagnosis and guidance for their rational management.
she naasurgical removl.
With those two cases and many others I started really getting interested in radiology since it
has pivotal role for patients' diagnosis and guidance for their rational management
with those inspirational igniting reasons, as well as for the following reasons decided to be
radiologist.
These are
The wide scope and advancing technological aspect of ft.
The inter-disciplinery discussions and consultations will have advantagein building up of
knowledge
The less invasive guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
Since you study entire body, you will have holistic approach for patient's problem.
