New Glowing Molecule, Invented By AI, Would Have Taken 500 Million Years To Evolve In Nature, Scientists Say

An artificial intelligence model has created a new protein that researchers say would have taken 500 million years to evolve in nature — if nature were capable of producing such a thing.

An artificial intelligence (AI) model has simulated half a billion years of molecular evolution to create the code for a previously unknown protein, according to a new study. The glowing protein, which is similar to those found in jellyfish and corals, may help in the development of new medicines, researchers say.

Proteins are one of the building blocks of life and perform various functions in the body, such as building muscles and fighting disease. The simulated protein, named esmGFP, only exists as computer code, but contains the blueprint for a previously unknown type of green fluorescent protein. In nature, green fluorescent proteins give fluorescent jellyfish and corals their glow.

The sequence of letters that spell out the instructions to make esmGFP is only 58% similar to the closest known fluorescent protein, which is a human-modified version of a protein found in bubble-tip sea anemones ( Entacmaea quadricolor ) — colorful sea creatures that look like they have bubbles on the ends of their tentacles. The rest of the sequence is unique, and would require a total of 96 different genetic mutations to evolve. These changes would have taken more than 500 million years to evolve naturally, according to the study.

Researchers at a company called EvolutionaryScale unveiled esmGFP and the AI model used to create it, ESM3, in a preprint study last year. Independent scientists have now peer-reviewed those findings, which were published Jan. 16 in the journal Science.

ESM3 doesn't design proteins within the usual constraints of evolution. Instead, it's a problem-solver that fills in gaps of incomplete protein code provided by the researchers, and in doing so designs something that could exist based on all of the potential pathways evolution could take.

"We've found that ESM3 learns fundamental biology, and can generate functional proteins outside the space explored by evolution," study co-author Alex Rives, co-founder and chief scientist of EvolutionaryScale, told Live Science in an email.

The new study builds on research that Rives and his colleagues began at Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, before starting EvolutionaryScale in 2024. ESM3 is their latest version of a generative language model similar to OpenAI's GPT-4, which runs ChatGPT, but it's based on biology.

... For ESM3 to understand proteins, researchers fed the model data on the main properties of a protein — amino acid sequence, structure and function — as a series of letters.

The team trained ESM3 on data from 2.78 billion proteins found in nature. The researchers then randomly hid parts of a protein blueprint and had ESM3 plug in the gaps to complete the code based on what it had learned.

"The same way a person can fill in the blanks in the soliloquy "to _ or not to _, that is the _," we can train a language model to fill in the blanks in proteins," Rives said. "Our research has shown that by solving this simple task, information about the deep structure of protein biology emerges in the network."..

Tiffany Taylor... reported on the preprint version of the study for Live Science in 2024. In her analysis, Taylor wrote that AI models like ESM3 will enable innovations in protein engineering that evolution can't. However, she also noted that the researchers' claim of simulating 500 million years of evolution is focussed only on individual proteins and does not account for the many stages of natural selection that ultimately create life.

"AI-driven protein engineering is intriguing, but I can't help feeling we might be overly confident in assuming we can outsmart the intricate processes honed by millions of years of natural selection," Taylor said.

Bill Gates Addresses Jeffrey Epstein Friendship: ‘I Was Foolish To Spend Any Time With Him’

Bill Gates has addressed his past friendship with disgraced late financier Jeffrey Epstein, saying it was a “huge mistake” to associate himself with the convicted child sex offender.

“In retrospect, I was foolish to spend any time with him,” the Microsoft co-founder, 69, told the Wall Street Journal Friday.

“I think I was quite stupid. I thought it would help me with global health philanthropy. In fact, it failed to do that. It was just a huge mistake.”

The billionaire added that after Epstein’s crimes came to light, he “definitely” became more cautious of the people he surrounds himself with.

Epstein died by suicide while awaiting trial on sex trafficking and federal conspiracy charges in 2019. He was 66.

According to the outlet, Epstein threatened to expose Gates’ alleged affair with Russian bridge player Mila Antonova in 2017 after Gates declined to join his multibillion-dollar charitable fund with JPMorgan Chase.

Epstein had been acquainted with Antonova since 2013 and even funded her enrollment into software coding school.

Gates, for his part, was allegedly embroiled in an affair with Antonova for years during his marriage to Melinda Gates from 1994 to 2021.

In March 2022, Melinda, 60, claimed Epstein played a role in the demise of the duo’s ill-fated 27-year marriage.

During an appearance on “CBS Mornings,” the philanthropist shared that she decided to leave her marriage “for many things,” including her ex-husband’s ties to Epstein.

“I did not like that he had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, no. I made that clear to him,” she said at the time, adding that she only met the late pedophile once because she “wanted to see who” he was.

“I regretted it the second I walked in the door,” she said. “He was abhorrent. He was evil personified. My heart breaks for these women.”

In an interview with the Times of London published Saturday, Bill said his divorce from Melinda will always be the “mistake” he regrets most.

The exes, who share three adult children: Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22, have since moved on.

Melinda found love with her entrepreneur boyfriend, Philip Vaughn, while Bill is currently dating Paula Hurd.

It’s not the first time Bill has opened up about his former friendship with Epstein.

In 2021, Bill told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that it was a “huge mistake to spend time with him” and “to give him the credibility of being there.”

Over 180 Palestinians Freed From Israeli Prisons, Many Show Signs Of 'Torture, Starvation'

Palestinian civil society groups and the Red Cross condemned the 'horrific' conditions of the prisoners and urged the international community to hold accountable those responsible

Israel released 183 Palestinian detainees in exchange for three Israeli captives on 1 February as part of the fourth prisoner swap under the ceasefire agreement underway in Gaza.

The group of detainees consists of 111 Palestinians from the Gaza Strip who were abducted by the Israeli army during its ethnic cleansing campaign in the enclave. Additionally, 32 detainees are from the occupied West Bank; they were transferred to the International Red Cross from the Ofer Prison facility close to Ramallah.

The moment the buses carrying freed Palestinian prisoners arrived in Khan Yunis, Gaza.

Palestinian health authorities report that many of the released detainees were taken directly to medical facilities due to signs of torture, starvation, and infections, including scabies. “Once again, every time prisoners are released, we find the prisoners’ bodies reflecting the level of crimes committed against them, including torture that is unprecedented in its level after October 7,” the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said in a statement.

“The transfer of a number of released prisoners directly to hospitals to receive treatment, after spending years in captivity, confirms the extent of the ugliness of what they are exposed to inside fascist prisons, where the occupation practices brutal methods of torture that violate all international norms and laws related to prisoners,” the Prisoners' Media Office in Gaza denounced.

....Earlier on Saturday, Hamas released three Israeli captives to officials from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Two of the captives were freed in a customary ceremony in front of onlookers in the southern city of Khan Yunis, while the third was handed over to the ICRC later in Gaza City in the north.
