Israel’s West Asian Allies Turn to Iraq for ‘New Silk Road’ Toward Europe

Turkiye, Qatar, and the UAE have joined Iraq in developing a land corridor connecting the Gulf to Europe, which has left a US–Israeli trade scheme in the dust

Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said on 7 May that projects encompassing the Development Road Project – a multi-billion land corridor stretching 1,200 kilometers from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea – are “nearing completion.”

“Projects are nearing completion. We will significantly reduce travel time between Asia and Europe via Turkiye. A ship departing from the Faw Port in Iraq and reaching Europe via the Suez Canal will save 15 days compared to the same cargo reaching Europe via the Development Road,” Uraloglu told Turkish daily Türkiye.

The official also spoke about the “significant costs” of the Development Road Project, which reportedly range “from $8 billion to $15 billion, possibly up to $20 billion.”

“The source of this financing could be the UAE, Qatar, or another country. The important thing is to secure capital under favorable conditions and to use it effectively,” Uraloglu said.

The entire project is expected to be completed within five years once the funding is secured.

Late last month, senior officials from Turkiye, Iraq, Qatar, and the UAE gathered in Iraq to sign a quadrilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to fund the land corridor, dealing a severe blow to the US-sponsored and Israel-centered India Middle East Europe Economic Corridors project (IMEC).

IMEC got complete support from US President Joe Biden during a G20 summit last September. The project aims to connect Asia and Europe via a system of railways and ports passing through India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, and Greece.

A few weeks after Biden’s announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu infamously presented a map of a “New Middle East” at the UN General Assembly in anticipation of a looming normalization deal with Saudi Arabia.

However, the launch of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October by the Palestinian resistance in Gaza, the Israeli genocide that followed, and the Yemeni blockade imposed on Israeli-linked vessels in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean threw all western plans for IMEC into disarray.

Doubts among international actors about the long-term viability of IMEC, given Israel’s genocidal actions and the resilient Yemeni blockade, prompted investors to consider the Development Road as an alternative, leading to last month’s summit in Baghdad.

🗣 GIVE US WEAPONS OR WE'LL KILL AND DESTROY GAZA MORE - says Israeli MP Tally Gotliv (possessed psycho speaking above), as Tel Aviv continues snapping at Washington for pausing weapon deliveries 'cause of genocidal Rafah Operation.

U.S. threatening not to give us precise weapons, Oh yeah! I got news for them, we have imprecise missiles, so maybe instead of using precise missiles to take down a specific building, we'll use imprecise ones to collapse ten buildings - Gotliv gloats.

Calm down, demon! no one believes Uncle Sam will really abandon his spoiled child, plus 100s of 1,000s of buildings in Gaza already destroyed like pictured bottom right, so there isn't much left to collapse... Posting controlled demolitions on TikTok is much cheaper and "more fun" anyway.

Record Wave of Americans Fled Big Cities for Small Ones in 2023

America’s small towns saw more in-migration in 2023 than larger areas for the first time in decades.

The remote work boom that prompted Americans to flee urban areas for mountain hamlets and seaside towns during the pandemic continued at least through last year, according to University of Virginia demographer Hamilton Lombard. An estimated 291,400 people last year migrated from other areas into America’s small towns and rural areas, which Lombard defines as metropolitan areas with 250,000 people or fewer.

That number exceeded net migration into larger areas for the first time since at least the 1970s.

“With a third of workdays being done remotely in 2023, Americans have more geographic flexibility and have been increasingly willing to move far from large population centers if their destination offers a good quality of life,” Lombard wrote.

Netanyahu’s Handling of Gaza Reflects Stance of ‘Large Majority of Israelis’: Blinken

Israeli media says the premier is 'convinced' he can win a snap election if growing political pressure leads to the dissolution of his government

US State Secretary Anthony Blinken said on 4 May that the genocidal actions undertaken by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Gaza are "a reflection of where a large majority of Israelis are in this moment.”

“This is a complicated government. It’s a balancing act when you have a coalition. And if you’re just looking at the politics of it, that’s something that he has to factor in,”
Blinken said at an event in Arizona.

"What’s important to understand is that much of what [Netanyahu is] doing is not simply a reflection of his politics or his policies; it’s actually a reflection of where a large majority of Israelis are in this moment,
” the top US diplomat said.

Last month, a survey conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute revealed that three-quarters of Jewish Israelis support Netanyahu's much-anticipated ground invasion of Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah, where about 1.3 million Palestinians are sheltering after being violently displaced from their homes.

Surveys conducted over recent months have shown a similar trend despite growing pressure to see Netanyahu removed from office.

In January, opinion polls showed that Israelis overwhelmingly agreed that “the best way” to obtain the release of captives held inside Gaza was “military pressure” against Hamas, falling in line with the same rhetoric Netanyahu and his war chief have been repeating daily since 7 October.

Polls have also shown a stern objection to delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, even if the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is “replaced.”

As Netanyahu continues to dig his heels in over the “need” to invade Rafah, on Friday, the Times of Israel reported that the premier “is convinced that he will win an election.”

US Military Acknowledges Errant Drone Strike Last Year Killed a Civilian, Not an Al-Qaeda Leader

A targeted U.S. drone strike in northwest Syria one year ago Friday hit and killed a civilian, not the al-Qaeda leader it was looking for, the Pentagon said after an internal review.

"U.S. Central Command acknowledges and regrets the civilian harm that resulted from the airstrike,
" the combatant command said in a statement after the year-long review. It confirmed the Syrian, Lufti Hasan Masto, "was struck and killed instead" of an intended senior al-Qaeda leader. The news was first reported by The Washington Post.

U.S. forces misidentified the target but found that "the strike was conducted in compliance with the law of armed conflict," CENTCOM said in a statement. It also said officers adhered to Pentagon and Central Command policies.

Still, CENTCOM acknowledged that its "investigation revealed several issues that could be improved" and said it was "committed to learning from this incident and improving our targeting processes to mitigate potential civilian harm."

... CENTCOM made no mention of potential disciplinary action and did not disclose issues it found, citing classified information that can't be shared.

In Holocaust Speech, President Biden Declares "Ironclad" Support for Israel, Slams College Protesters

On Tuesday (May 7), President Biden delivered a speech at the Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Days of Remembrance Ceremony and declared his support for Israel remains “ironclad."

“My commitment to the safety of the Jewish people, the security of Israel, and its right to exist as an independent Jewish state is ironclad, even when we disagree,” Biden said.

He also slammed the pro-Palestinian protests at colleges across the country, again smearing them all as antisemitic despite the fact that many Jewish students are participating.

“On college campuses, Jewish students blocked, harassed, attacked while walking to class,” Biden said. “Antisemitism—antisemitic posters, slogans calling for the annihilation of Israel, the world’s only Jewish State.”

In his speech on the Holocaust, the president made no mention of the tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians who have been slaughtered by Israel in the US-backed campaign in Gaza. Last month, Amos Goldberg, a Holocaust scholar at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, said Israel was “undoubtedly” committing genocide.

Goldberg wrote in The Palestine Project: “Yes, it is genocide. It is so difficult and painful to admit it, but despite all that, and despite all our efforts to think otherwise, after six months of brutal war we can no longer avoid this conclusion. Jewish history will henceforth be stained with the mark of Cain for the ‘most horrible of crimes,’ which cannot be erased from its forehead. As such, this is the way it will be viewed in history’s judgment for generations to come.”

Russia Blocks Rumble

The Russian government has officially blocked access to the video-sharing platform Rumble, following the company’s refusal to comply with demands for censorship. That’s according to Chris Pavlovski, CEO of Rumble, who confirmed the news, highlighting the platform’s commitment to free speech and its refusal to bend to external pressures.

Russia has officially blocked Rumble because we refused to comply with their censorship demands,” Pavlovski stated. He pointed out the apparent contradiction in the treatment of different tech companies, noting, “Ironically, YouTube is still operating in Russia, and everyone needs to ask what Russian demands Google and YouTube are complying with?”

The block comes amid heightened tensions over internet freedoms in Russia. The government has been tightening its grip on online content, demanding that platforms remove or block content it deems politically sensitive or harmful.

This action against Rumble raises questions about the operations of other tech giants in the country, notably YouTube. The Google-owned video service continues to operate, suggesting it may be meeting Russian regulatory demands that Rumble has rejected.

Netanyahu Ditches Captives to ‘Hunt Down’ Hamas Leaders: Report

As part of the scheme, Tel Aviv is preparing to establish a 'long-term' military presence in Gaza with 'partial approval' from the US

The Israeli government has “abandoned its goals” of recovering dozens of captives who remain inside Gaza to instead “pursue top Palestinian leaders,” Israeli military officials revealed to Middle East Eye (MEE).

“Netanyahu's operations in Gaza are fundamentally aimed at ... hunting down Yahya Sinwar,”
one of the Israeli officers, who is serving in Gaza, told the UK-based outlet, stressing that the war is “personal” for the premier.

“A few hostages might be exchanged. However, hostages are no longer of concern to anyone,
” the sources said.

Officials in Tel Aviv are reportedly “obsessed” with capturing Sinwar and other top officials within the Qassam Brigades – the armed wing of Hamas.

Another Israeli officer who spoke with MEE said a “new phase” of the genocidal war involving “long-term military presence” is being planned, alleging that this has been “partially approved” by Washington.

“This plan has been partially approved by the US … It's all part of a plan agreed upon by the two countries for a Hamas-free Gaza,”
the officer is quoted as saying...

Israeli estimates claim 128 of around 250 captives taken by the Palestinian resistance on 7 October remain inside Gaza, including 35 who the military says are dead. According to Hamas officials, at least 70 captives have been killed by Israeli attacks in the strip.

The new stance by the Israeli government comes despite large protests that have been raging for weeks by citizens demanding the captives be returned.

“We heard from sources involved in the negotiations that … the one thing separating us from the return of our loved ones was and remains an Israeli guarantee of an end to this war. To Netanyahu and the government of Israel, we clearly say from this stage, if the only way to get the hostages back is by providing an Israeli guarantee to end this war, then end this war,"
Shahar Mor Zahiro, a family member of one of the captives, said during a rally earlier this week.
