❗️NATO declares Arctic a key strategic frontline for military expansion
NATO’s top military commander in Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, said Sunday that the Arctic and Northern Europe have become a key “front line for strategic competition.” Speaking at a security conference in Sweden, he warned that Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, and other nations are deepening cooperation, with joint patrols and military-focused research in Arctic waters. Grynkewich said Chinese icebreakers and research vessels are operating in the region to gain a military advantage, while Russia is testing advanced capabilities in the Barents Sea.
He highlighted broader global tensions, noting that China continues to fund Russia’s war in Ukraine, Iran supplies weapons and technology, and North Korean troops remain near the Ukrainian border. Grynkewich also pointed to a so-called “dark fleet” of oil tankers involving Russia, Iran, and Venezuela that helps finance conflicts, drawing parallels to emerging patterns in the High North.
Grynkewich called NATO allies’ recent commitments to increase defense spending historic but called for faster delivery of equipment, weapons, and ammunition to allied forces to strengthen military readiness in the Arctic and surrounding regions.

Somalia has reportedly suspended all UAE use of the country for military activity
The UAE has begun evacuating security personnel and heavy military equipment from Somalia, after officials in Mogadishu reportedly suspended Emirati use of their territory and airspace for military operations, Middle East Eye (MEE) reported on 12 January.
The Somali government informed the Emiratis that “all their military activities in Somalia, including the use of airspace and the landing of cargo military aircraft in Bosaso, Berbera and Mogadishu, had been suspended,” a senior Somali official told MEE, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The official said the UAE now appears to be evacuating its security personnel and military equipment to neighboring Ethiopia.
Citing flight-tracking data and two eyewitnesses, MEE reported that an average of six IL-76 cargo aircraft have arrived and departed the air base in Bosaso – the port city in Somalia’s Puntland – each day over recent days.
One source speaking with the UK news outlet described the flights as “resembling a hurried evacuation.”

The document dates back to October 2023 and is addressed to the Joint Operations Command of the UAE Armed Forces. It was written by Hamdan bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Representative of the Al-Dhafra Region and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority.
“With the [7 October] terrorist … attacks on the sister state of Israel, and based on the historic agreement stipulating cooperation between the two countries … and in implementation of the order issued by the UAE Joint Operations Command to support the State of Israel through military bases in the southern Red Sea region – Al-Mokha on Yemen’s western coast, as well as Massawa and Assab in Eritrea and Somalia – swift preparations and readiness were undertaken to provide our military bases in the southern Red Sea, especially in Yemen, with everything necessary to support the State of Israel,” the document starts out by saying.
The document explicitly calls for the UAE to “strengthen Israel in its war on the terrorists in Palestine,” and for that support to continue “until the terrorists are defeated.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt signed a security agreement in Jerusalem on 11 January, describing Iran and its allies as a “threat” to Israel, regional stability, and international security, warning that Israel’s enemies are monitored “at all times and everywhere.”
The declaration commits Israel and Germany to expanded cooperation on “counterterrorism,” cyber security, and what the Israeli prime minister’s office described as “advanced technologies,” while explicitly targeting resistance factions in Iran, Lebanon, Palestine, and Yemen as destabilizing forces.
According to the Israeli statement, the agreement “anchors Germany’s deep commitment to the security of the State of Israel,” arguing that Iran and its allies threaten not only Israel but also “regional stability and international security.”
Netanyahu said the pact formalizes broad coordination between the security apparatuses of both countries, adding that Israel’s “enemies should know” they are being watched “at all times and everywhere.”
The signing comes despite Germany having halted certain military exports to Israel in August that could be used in Gaza, following Israeli plans to fully occupy the Palestinian enclave. Germany remains Israel’s second-largest arms supplier after the US.

A new report in The New York Times says the US military painted a warplane to look like a civilian aircraft and hid its weapons inside the fuselage before launching its first strike on a suspected drug-smuggling boat from Venezuela, killing 11 people in September. Officials say the plane lacked normal military markings and flew low enough that those on the boat could see it.
Legal experts cited in the report say disguising a combat aircraft to deceive targets could amount to “perfidy,” a war crime explicitly prohibited by the laws of armed conflict because it blurs the line between civilian objects and legitimate military forces. Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Steven J. Lepper, a former senior military lawyer, noted that if the aircraft’s appearance misled the people on the boat into thinking it was harmless, that misuse of civilian status could violate international norms.

According to the Iranian hacking group Handala, "guiding officer" Mehrdad Rahimi was coordinating networks involved in the riots in Iran and channeled financial support to operatives, believing he was overseeing and directing the protest infrastructure:
"Mehrdad Rahimi, serving as the guiding officer for Iranian agents within Mossad’s Iran Desk, attempted to play a major role in organizing and directing networks behind the unrest inside Iran. By managing and directing Iranian operatives, he sought to establish greater coordination and cohesion among the main ringleaders of the riots, while also providing the financial support necessary to sustain and expand anti-Iranian activities."
Handala says it has obtained video footage recorded outside Mehrdad Rahimi’s residence during what it describes as an extended surveillance operation targeting the Mossad-linked officer. The group claims the material shows that Rahimi’s movements were closely tracked throughout the operation.
According to Handala, the surveillance extended to hacking Rahimi’s secure phone, which it says enabled the identification and monitoring of individuals allegedly connected to riot networks.
