❗️Major investigation exposes Israel working to thwart war crimes prosecutions worldwide
A major investigation led by Mediapart in partnership with eight European media outlets has found that Israel quietly set up a specialized government department in 2010 to counter legal action against its political and military leadership abroad. Operating within the Ministry of Justice, the unit was tasked with conducting what internal documents describe as “legal warfare,” using legal, diplomatic and political pressure to obstruct war crimes cases in European and international courts. The investigation is based on a leak of more than two million internal emails exchanged between 2009 and 2023, which detail coordinated efforts to influence judges, lobby foreign governments and derail proceedings behind closed doors.
According to the findings, a core mission of the department was to prevent the arrest of Israeli officials under universal jurisdiction laws. Senior politicians and military figures were repeatedly warned against traveling to certain European countries to avoid the risk of detention. The leaked correspondence shows the unit claiming responsibility for the collapse of dozens of criminal and civil cases targeting Israel and its officials across Europe and beyond. It also documents direct interventions in cases involving companies accused of supplying the Israeli military or operating in illegal settlements, with legal maneuvers reported in Spain, the Netherlands and France.
In Spain, sustained lobbying reportedly helped shut down a case against a former defense minister and senior officers accused of involvement in an attack in Gaza that killed 14 civilians, including children. In the Netherlands, the investigation found that Israel covertly financed a settlement in a lawsuit against a Dutch company supplying attack dogs to the army, while concealing its role from the Palestinian victim’s legal team.
The investigation further reveals that the department devoted significant resources to limiting action by the International Criminal Court. Internal emails cited by the media partners suggest officials believed they had managed to delay an ICC investigation into alleged war crimes in Palestine by nearly a decade. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese dismissed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim that Australia’s recognition of Palestinian statehood “pours fuel” on an “antisemitic fire.”
In an interview with the ABC, Albanese said there is no link between the recognition and the Bondi Beach attack and stressed that most of the world supports a two-state solution.
Responding to Netanyahu’s criticism that he had shown weakness instead of resolve, Albanese said his priority is national unity and supporting the Jewish community. “The terrorists seek to divide us as a nation, to pitch Australian against Australian,” he said, adding that his role is to stand with all Australians affected.

ISIS Claims Deadly Attack On Syrian Troops Near Idlib
Syria’s new president has been strongly criticized by ISIS over the past year despite his former ties to the extremist organization
ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack on Syrian internal security forces, which resulted in the killing of four soldiers in the countryside of the northern Idlib governorate.
“The soldiers of the caliphate attacked a patrol of the apostate Syrian government on the Maarat al-Naaman road yesterday with machine gun weapons, which led to the killing of four and the wounding of one and the destruction of their vehicle,” ISIS said in a statement on 15 December.
After the group claimed responsibility on Monday, Syrian forces came under a new attack near Aleppo. “Unknown gunmen on a motorcycle targeted two members of the Defense Ministry near the town of Ghazawiyah, west of Aleppo, resulting in the injury of one of them,” a military source told state-news agency SANA.
The attack claimed by ISIS took place on Sunday evening in the town of Maarat al-Naaman in Idlib countryside.
Syria’s Interior Ministry said a patrol “came under attack during the execution of its mission,” adding that “specialized security units have launched intensive sweep operations in the area to pursue those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.”

Sydney police removed a Jewish woman from a memorial vigil for the Bondi Beach attack after she voiced pro-Palestine views and criticized Israel, prompting a hostile reaction from the crowd.
Michelle Berkon, who was wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh, was surrounded by hundreds of attendees chanting “get her out” before officers escorted her away. Speaking to the media afterward, Berkon said she is Jewish and believed she had every right to be present and to speak.
“I came here today because I’m a Jewish person. My family was murdered in the Holocaust,” she said, adding that the tragedy had been politicized, pointing out the Israeli flags present at the vigil. Berkon, a member of Jews Against the Occupation, said she was removed after being targeted by what she described as aggressive Zionists.
