Israeli Blockade Leaves '100 Percent' Of Gaza's Population At Risk Of Famine: UN

Israel allowed only a 'trickle' of food into the strip this week after three months of a complete blockade, while killing seven Gaza police officers seeking to prevent the looting of aid

The entire population of Gaza, over 2 million people, is at risk of famine, the UN stated on 30 May, after nearly three months of Israel's near-total blockade of the strip.

“Gaza is the hungriest place on Earth,” said Jens Laerke, a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

“It's the only defined area – a country or defined territory within a country – where you have the entire population at risk of famine. One hundred percent of the population at risk of famine,” he said, rejecting claims to the contrary by Israeli authorities.

On 2 March, Israel reimposed a total blockade on Gaza, preventing all food and humanitarian aid from entering, creating severe shortages of food and medicine.

In recent days, Israel has allowed just a trickle of aid to enter the strip amid international criticism of its use of starvation as a weapon of war.

⭕️ UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini has warned that the limited aid entering Gaza “makes a mockery of the mass tragedy unfolding” and urged political action to end the ongoing starvation.

'Syria And Israel Share Common Enemies': Sharaa

Damascus and Tel Aviv have reportedly been engaged in 'face-to-face' talks over recent weeks

Syria's self-appointed interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa declared during an interview with the Jewish Journal that Israel and Syria share “common enemies” and said he is ready to engage with Tel Aviv if there is “a clear path to coexistence.”

“The era of endless tit-for-tat bombings must end. No nation prospers when its skies are filled with fear. The reality is, we have common enemies — and we can play a major role in regional security,” Sharaa, formerly known as Al-Qaeda leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani, told the Los Angeles-based publication.

“Peace must be earned through mutual respect, not fear. We will engage where there is honesty and a clear path to coexistence — and walk away from anything less," he added.

Sharaa also voiced support for reviving the principles of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement (Dofa Accord), calling it a possible framework for “mutual restraint and protection of civilians.”

The statements from the de facto president come amid reports in western media saying Israeli and Syrian officials have been engaged in face-to-face talks over recent weeks aimed at “preventing another flareup along their shared border.”
