Netanyahu's Refusal To End Gaza Genocide Killed Over 40 Israeli Captives: Report

An analysis from the New York Times shows that many were killed by Israeli bombing and friendly fire during military operations after Netanyahu refused to reach a ceasefire with Hamas to end the war

Of the 251 Israeli soldiers and civilians taken captive by Hamas to Gaza on 7 October 2023, 41 have been killed, including many by Israeli bombing and friendly fire, according to an analysis by The New York Times (NYT) published on 8 March.

The NYT reviewed forensic reports and military investigations into their deaths, as well as interviews with more than a dozen Israeli soldiers and officials, a senior regional official, and seven relatives of captives.

Of the 59 captives still held by Hamas and other Palestinian resistance groups in Gaza, the Israel government has said that only 24 remain alive. One hundred and thirty others have been released alive, while the corpses of 40 others have been returned to Israel in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and detainees following ceasefire agreements in November 2023 and January of this year.

Many have died due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's preference to continue his genocidal war on Gaza, which has killed over 50,000 Palestinians, the majority women and children, rather than reach a deal for a permanent end to the war.

"We could have brought home more hostages — earlier and for a smaller price," Yoav Gallant, Israel's defense minister until November, said in a televised interview last month.

Israeli Spy Agencies Develop ‘Chat GPT-like’ AI Tool To Target Palestinians: Report

The AI tool uses massive amounts of data and can identify what ‘every person in the West Bank is doing’

Israel has compiled an extensive collection of intercepted Palestinian communications to develop an artificial intelligence tool similar to ChatGPT, which it aims to use to enhance its espionage capabilities, according to an investigation by the Guardian released on 6 March.

The investigation, conducted jointly with Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and the Hebrew outlet Local Call, uncovered that the Israeli army’s Unit 8200 programmed the AI tool to understand colloquial Arabic by using large amounts of Palestinian phone calls and text messages obtained through its surveillance.

Unit 8200 “began building the model to create a sophisticated chatbot-like tool capable of answering questions about people it is monitoring and providing insights into the massive volumes of surveillance data it collects,” the investigation revealed.

The development of the system was accelerated after the start of Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza.

An informed source told the Guardian that “AI amplifies power,” adding: “It’s not just about preventing shooting attacks, I can track human rights activists, monitor Palestinian construction in Area C [of the West Bank]. I have more tools to know what every person in the West Bank is doing.”
