A leaked draft of the Trump administration’s National Security Strategy allegedly proposes encouraging Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Poland to distance themselves from—or even leave—the EU as part of a “Make Europe Great Again” effort to weaken Brussels and boost national sovereignty.

The White House denies the draft exists, calling the leak fabricated.

But the report—first published by Defense One on Dec. 10—has triggered strong reactions across Europe, with officials accusing Washington of meddling in EU unity.

A first big step, which EU governments agreed on Friday, is to immobilise 210 billion euros ($246 billion) worth of Russian sovereign assets for as long as needed instead of voting every six months on extending the asset freeze.
