🌟 GRAMMAR: STATIVES
🤔 Words like ablaze, afire, afloat etc. are usually considered to be adjectives. However, some grammarians would argue that they represent a separate part of speech - the stative.
🔺Such words may be considered to be a part of speech in its own right since they meet two criteria:
a) they have distinctive morphological form - prefix a- (afoot, adrift).
b) they denote the category of state, not the quality of the noun.
c) they are used to form compound predicates.
🔺Nowadays this class of words is called predicative adjectives, marking their syntactical role, but the majority of linguists doesn't consider it to be a separate part of speech.
