π΄ The flood of immigrants to Gavdos and Crete is still a critical problem
>https://archive.ph/F0DIT
πΈ Over the past week, 313 illegal immigrants were "rescued" while heading to Gavdos island, near Crete.
βΌοΈ Gavdos has a total of 142 native residents that live in the island permanently
πΈ The illegal immigrants reported that they paid between 2.500 to 4.000 Euros per person to be smuggled into Europe
β οΈ Since August 18, illegal immigrants arriving to the islands are considered Detainees and are not being transferred to Mainland Greece, the ones arriving to Gavdos are transferred to Crete and held there
πΈ Guards are complaining about overcrowding and fights among immigrants which are hard to break out because due to the number of immigrants the force has been stretched thin

π’ Letting them suffer with overcrowding and fights might be the best strategy, when they eventually get deported they'll tell those stories abroad and start avoiding Crete at least

πΈ The number of illegal immigrants arriving to Crete and other Greek islands in the Eastern Mediterranean has increased a lot lately. Gavdos and Crete are suffering the most but Samos has also seen a sharp increase of immigrants reaching the island from the Turkish coast
β οΈ Samos: Between September 15 and 21, over 358 illegal immigrants reached the island (video 1 from Agios Nikolaos Kontokaikon)
β οΈ Gavdos/Crete: Crete has become the island with the most arrivals since last year due to its proximity with Libya, with immigrant camps/detention centers hosting over 1000 illegal immigrants in Crete, most arrive directly to Gavdos and later are transferred to Crete (video 2 from Gavdos)
πΈ Many of the immigrants arriving are from Sudan's rural areas (video 2 and 3)

π΄ Immigrant arrivals to Crete went up 250% from 2024 to 2025

πΈ In 2024 about 5.050 illegal immigrants arrived to Crete and adjacent islands, in 2025 (until now) there have been around 17.650, a 249% increase in just one year
πΈ This is due to the fact that smugglers have been successful in transporting illegal immigrants to the island of Gavdos south of Crete and due to the illegals not being deported the destination became popular among smugglers

π’ The government's big talk had no effect since their measures do not prevent immigrants from reaching the island nor do they deport the ones who arrive, which in turn does not create a deterrent
