Lessons from Spain & Portugal Blackouts⚡️

Love the post. https://nickita.substack.com/p/spain-and-portugal-blackouts

As someone who just lived through the 'blackouts' yesterday, I would add something else very important.

The power across the whole country went out about 11am on a beautiful sunny day and was back on by 8pm in the evening.

No one knew of course why at the time and no one knew how long until we would get power back.

I agree with everything in the article. Nickita and I are on the same page, but one bit stood out:

"Spain and Portugal are currently facing large-scale blackouts. Hospitals, airports, fuel stations, public transport, everything grinding to a halt."

Madrid airport did close, and reports were coming in of Lisbon airport shutting down (but it didn't), planes falling from the sky (they didn't) and hospitals in turmoil (they weren't).

All flights in Portugal except for those to/from Madrid continued as usual, with some delays, because the airports had backup generators.

Sure it would have been more chaotic with traffic issues in the biggest city in Portugal, Lisbon, and Madrid in Spain had more problems, but for the vast majority of people everything just kept going.

We had no traffic lights. It was actually cool to drive around like in a movie when the bad guys turn off the traffic lights to cause chaos, yet it did not really cause chaos (I did not go into a city though because I could imagine traffic jams). Several petrol stations did close, but many stayed open, again running on power generators.

Many supermarkets closed. Many stayed open running on power generators. In those supermarkets people could pay by card. In smaller shops that stayed open, people could pay by cash.

Just like Covid, out and about in the countryside, there was nothing unusual going on at all unless you listened to the news/social media.

There was some panic. Long queues to get petrol and people buying canned goods and bottles of water in supermarkets. But people I saw were friendly and not crazy panicking, but rather taking precautions and while enjoying the day off work drinking a coffee outside.

When it was announced on the news that power would be restored, there was a big discussion on the news about how people on social media had created unnecessary fake news (over here anyway) like planes falling etc; yet of course the mainstream news contributed, reporting on the hospitals in panic (when they weren't).

You are right we've seen it all before. A nice thought exercise:

How crazy would Covid have been if no one had watched the news?

Think about that seriously. If no one had watched the news, how crazy would Covid have been?

(we could also add: And not engaged in panic social media).

I say it would have washed over us and passed most people by.

For me there was 1 practical lesson yesterday:

We could still buy things with cash with no power. And many houses like mine use gas for cooking and hot water so my only issue was the fridge was defrosting. It also would have sucked if you had an electric car and needed to drive a long way. So the lesson is - we need to really think about relying so much on electricity.

Also, in Portugal, we have oranges and lemons and figs growing all over the place and fountains with water coming down from the mountains. So if you have access to water and some food and a roof over your head, you will be okay.

Experientially it reminded me of once again:

It is 99% never as bad as we imagine it to be.

People 99% stick together and do not fight.

99% of the fear news is an outright lie.

Finally, in hindsight we always see we did not need to panic at all and panicking just made it worse for those who did.

Like any situation, some do suffer. And our ego jumps to 'what about those people!?' to defend itself. I am not saying it was okay for everyone.

People were stuck in the Lisbon metro for hours. Imagine needing the toilet, or about to give birth (but again, we can imagine it, but maybe that didn't happen yesterday).

➡️ part 1

And again, the people most likely to suffer were those who were in fear. Whether in the subway or somewhere else.

Yes the world is changing (when have two 'developed' countries lost total power ever before in our life times?), and they will continue to do so.

But if we focus on relaxing our nervous system, and enjoying what is happening around us, so we are 99% happy and at peace, our inner knowing will always let us know what to do and keep us safe in those moments when the sh*t really does hit the fan - which from moment to moment is typically very rare.

The question is - how much are you, the one reading this, doing the work needed within, and how much are you, the one reading this, focused on what is happening out there, cause what you do within empowers you with everything you need to be ready for anything that happens out there.

Then there is nothing to worry about at all.

A Somatic Guide to Grief and Heartbreak (II)

Following on from the first post in this series, today I want to explore some somatic and physiological perspectives on grief and heartbreak.

I will begin by emphasising that grief is a bodily, somatic experience. It cannot be fully experienced or healed without including the body in the process. Much of the time we try to think or will ourselves out of heartbreak by changing our beliefs, thought process or narratives about what we have lost. This can only really work when the body also accompanies such a change internally—otherwise it feels fragmentary, or the change won’t really land or penetrate.

From a somatic point of view, a shift in mental perspective will happen automatically as a consequence of body-level change. Therefore we work from the bottom-up (from the body into the mind), to better accommodate the body’s natural timing and instincts towards healing and restoration.

side note

This post will necessarily be somewhat descriptive, as I want you to have the fullest possible understanding and awareness of what is happening inside you (or inside your grieving friend) ...

Be the Capybara

Yes, it's true, the capybara is surprisingly tolerated by many predators, including crocodiles, caimans, jaguars, and anacondas, far more than you’d expect for a large, slow-moving rodent.

And yes, scientists have observed this behavior and don't fully understand why it happens.

Possible explanations:

Capybaras are extremely calm and social – their non-threatening behavior may prevent triggering aggression.

Mutual tolerance – capybaras don’t compete, so there’s no rivalry.

Habituation – in areas where capybaras and predators co-exist regularly, they might become used to each other’s presence.

Unusual interspecies friendships – capybaras are famous for calmly coexisting with a wide variety of animals (birds, monkeys, even cats).

Some scientists suggest they emit calming or non-threatening signals chemically or behaviorally.

Infinite Potential: A Film for The New Paradigm⚡️

Bohm was one of the 20th Century’s most brilliant physicists, but most of us have never heard of him. Until now.

He was censored by the orthodox scientific community, including Oppenheimer, Einstein and Bohr, because his research unified Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity into a radically new order for physics.

Bohm's research found a unity and wholeness that unified science and spirituality by saying physical reality has an underlying intelligence (information potential), and that our perceived reality is in thought itself.

His paper Hidden Variables was censored because his findings were a threat to the scientific community, as well as to governments.

He found friendship in Krishnamurti whose view on thought, reality and consciousness aligned with Bohm's own research.

Bohm concluded reality is undivided wholeness, not division, and this fact has yet to dawn on billions of people.

Here’s what happens when you actually step away for a while…

• All those things happening in the world? Still there when you come back.

• You don’t realise how often you reach for your phone… until you stop.

• Focusing on you instead of endless updates lets your nervous system relax and unwind.

• Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish — it’s, well, self-care.

• A personal system defrag — you can also show up better for everyone around you.

• You’ll tune back in feeling refreshed — like life is a good friend, not a to-do list.

If you’ve taken a break before, share what changed for you..

Ignore perfection. Perfection is impossible because we can always be a little more perfect. "You should be doing X; you should not be doing Y." says that little self-punishing voice in our heads which is just the mind measuring you against inherited narratives. And yes, perfection is literally impossible, because there’s always one more tweak, one more “could be better”. But you can follow your inner knowing. Not the mind. The heart. And celebrate living your truth.
