In Counsels and Maxims, Schopenhauer argues that happiness is best understood as the absence of suffering rather than the presence of pleasure. Because desire inevitably leads to dissatisfaction, wisdom consists in limiting wants, lowering expectations, and avoiding unnecessary risks. He emphasizes self knowledge, moderation, and acceptance of lifeβs constraints as the foundations of a tolerable existence.
Schopenhauer also stresses the value of solitude and intellectual independence, viewing constant social engagement as a source of distraction and conformity. The work presents a practical ethics focused on minimizing suffering rather than pursuing happiness, advocating a disciplined and inwardly oriented way of life.
