🚀 Indian Court Orders Immediate Ban on Proton Mail Amid Legal Dispute

According to PANews, the Karnataka High Court in India has ordered an immediate ban on the encrypted email service Proton Mail, citing the authority of the country's Information Technology Act of 2008. This decision, made on April 29, 2025, follows a lawsuit filed in January by a design company in New Delhi, which accused its employees of receiving offensive emails through the service. Proton Mail previously faced a proposed ban in March 2024 due to a 'false bomb threat,' but it was not implemented.

This ruling highlights the increasing global regulatory scrutiny on encrypted communication platforms. Recently, Telegram founder Pavel Durov was arrested in France over content moderation issues. Additionally, Proton Mail's Swiss parent company provided user data to Spanish authorities in 2024, raising concerns among privacy advocates about the centralization of services.

🚀 Australian Police Arrest 55 in Major Operation Targeting Organized Crime

According to Foresight News, South Australian police have arrested 55 suspects and filed approximately 800 new charges related to drug trafficking, weapons offenses, and conspiracy crimes in the third phase of Operation Ironside. This operation is a joint investigation between the Australian Federal Police and the FBI, focusing on dismantling organized crime networks.

The investigation revealed that at least 1,600 devices in Australia were using the encrypted application AN0M. In the first two phases of the operation, around 19.3 million messages were intercepted. Earlier this month, the High Court ruled that the collection of AN0M messages was legal and could be used as evidence, dismissing appeals from two suspects.

The Australian Federal Police previously estimated that the total value of seized encrypted assets related to this investigation has reached approximately 37.9 million Australian dollars.

🚀 India's Smuggling Report Highlights Rising Use of Cryptocurrency

According to ChainCatcher, the Indian Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has raised concerns in its '2024-25 India Smuggling Report' about the increasing use of cryptocurrencies and stablecoins in drug and gold smuggling operations. The report highlights that digital assets, due to their decentralized, anonymous, and borderless nature, offer smuggling groups faster anonymous settlements, minimal regulation, and weak anti-money laundering compliance.

A case uncovered by the DRI revealed that an international gold smuggling syndicate laundered over $12.7 million through hawala networks and USDT. The masterminds behind the operation used multiple crypto wallets to layer funds and maintain anonymity, communicating via encrypted applications like WeChat through VPNs.

🚀 Uganda's Internet Shutdown Boosts Bitchat App Downloads

According to Odaily, the Ugandan government has cut off internet access nationwide during the presidential election, leading to a surge in downloads of the encrypted communication app Bitchat. The Uganda Communications Commission confirmed that the internet shutdown took effect at 6 p.m. local time on Tuesday and will remain in place throughout the election period.

Bitchat, which enables encrypted communication without internet via a Bluetooth mesh network, has topped the download charts on both the Apple App Store and Google Play in Uganda. Additionally, several VPN applications have also seen high download rates, indicating a significant increase in the public's demand for information access ahead of the election.

The Ugandan government stated that the internet shutdown aims to prevent the spread of false information during the election. However, critics argue that this move could restrict the flow of election-related information. The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission had previously stated that there would be no internet shutdown, yet the measure was implemented. As of early January, over 400,000 users in Uganda had downloaded Bitchat.

This marks the third consecutive presidential election in Uganda where a nationwide internet shutdown has been enforced, with similar actions taken during the 2016 and 2021 elections. The report also notes that Bitchat has been widely used in various countries facing internet restrictions or sudden disasters, becoming a popular alternative communication tool in such environments.

🚀 DeadLock Ransomware Utilizes Polygon Smart Contracts for Evasion

According to ChainCatcher, the ransomware family DeadLock is employing Polygon smart contracts to distribute and rotate proxy server addresses, aiming to evade security detection. Initially discovered in July 2025, this malware embeds JavaScript code within HTML files to interact with the Polygon network, using RPC lists as gateways to obtain server addresses controlled by attackers. This technique resembles the previously identified EtherHiding method, which leverages decentralized ledgers to create hard-to-block covert communication channels. DeadLock has released at least three variants, with the latest version incorporating the encrypted communication application Session to directly communicate with victims.
