As the sun rises this morning, @NOAA's #GOESEast 🛰️ can see cloud streets streaming from the Great Lakes, which are bringing heavy lake effect snow to some downwind locations. #WinterStorm Warnings and #LakeEffect Snow Warnings are in effect for parts MI, OH, PA and NY today.

Yesterday, @NOAA's #GOESEast satellite detected several lightning strikes within #LakeEffect snow bands in Upstate New York. Although thunderstorms are less common in the winter, sometimes lightning can occur within snowstorms—a phenomenon called thundersnow.

A view from @NOAA's #GOESEast 🛰️ today shows a large swath of snow on the ground from Mississippi to New York as well as bands of #CloudStreets streaming off the Great Lakes. Several more feet of #LakeEffect snow could fall in locations downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario.

This #TimelapseTuesday, we're looking back to this past Friday, where @NOAA's #GOESEast 🛰️ captured a very cool phenomenon over Lake Michigan—more than a dozen cloud eddies (AKA: mesovortices) in a serpentine pattern that also dumped a lot of snow due to the #LakeEffect.
