Time to delve into the (shifting) chances of a white Christmas in Europe with some ERA5 reanalysis data. Nowadays, places like Lapland, high-altitude regions of Scandinavia, and Alpine peaks still offer a snowy guarantee on Christmas Eve.
However, comparing to the climatological period of 1951-1980, the probability of a white Christmas has plummeted. Unfortunatly, climate change is leaving it's mark on the typical Christmas setting with snow. Some areas like Central Europe seeing drops in probability of a white Christmas Eve up to 50%pt.
Numbers speak volumes: during the climatological period of 1951-1980, snow on Christmas Eve was near certain in most of Scandinavia, Finland and in more areas in eastern Europe, too. Currently, white Christmases are more of an exception in much of Europe.
If we compute trendlines, arguably a fairer way of analysing changes in snow probability, the situation since 1970 has evolved like this:
Notably, there are also few areas, like southern England, that have, according to ERA5 data, seen more white Christmases in recent decades. However, this is likely a result of yearly variability rather than a clear climatological trend. The relatively low number of white Christmases in general allows for a very low signal-to-noise region.
Overall, dreaming of a white Christmas might become the norm, as actual white Christmases will continue to become more rare in most of Europe as the climate continues to warm.
For the people among us that enjoy snow or the typical Christmas atmosphere that snow brings, the trends are mostly a sad fact and arguably a loss of culture. However, the broader implications of these shifts for our climate and ecosystems are profound.
To secure more white Christmases for future generations, we need to act on climate now.
