Today is International Day of Forests! 🌳

Forests are the backbone of global food security and nutrition, sustaining millions of people by providing essential foods that are critical for Indigenous and rural communities. Forests strengthen agriculture networks by hosting pollinators, enriching soil, regulating climate, and conserving biodiversity. They also provide energy for activities like cooking and supply freshwater to over 85% of the world’s major cities. Quite simply, healthy forests mean thriving food systems.

Yet, these irreplaceable ecosystems are under threat. Every year, 10 million hectares of forest are lost to deforestation, while wildfires affect approximately 70 million hectares. Protecting and restoring primary forests is not just an environmental necessity - it’s essential for securing food systems, livelihoods, and the health of communities across the world.

On this International Day of Forests, we call for urgent action. The future of food begins in the forests. Let’s work together to keep them standing.
