RT @LDO_Space: Congratulations to @esa and @eumetsat! Technologies developed by #Leonardo are on board the MetOp-SG-A1 mission, which aims to improve weather forecasting and monitor the #Earth’s atmosphere. The same satellite also hosts the @CopernicusEU Sentinel-5 instrument, to which Leonardo technologies contribute as well.
Leonardo, also through its joint ventures @telespazio and @Thales_Alenia_S, Leonardo has long been a key partner in both the MetOp and Copernicus programmes. For this launch, the company has supplied advanced electro-optical instruments, designed at its Campi Bisenzio site (Florence, Italy), to support atmospheric monitoring and climate change research.
One of these is #3MI, developed for MetOp-SG-A1. This instrument brings together three observation modes in a single payload. Its two “fish eye” telescopes each offer a 110-degree field of view, enabling wide-angle Earth observation focused on aerosols and cloud dynamics. For MetOp-SG-A1, #Telespazio is managing LEOP (Launch and Early Orbit Phase) operations from the Fucino Space Centre, ensuring the correct deployment of the solar panels, activation of the propulsion system, Earth-pointing acquisition and the orbital manoeuvres required to reach operational orbit.
Leonardo also provided the SWIR subsystem for Sentinel-5, a high-resolution spectrometer that measures key atmospheric components such as CO₂, ozone and methane, helping monitor air quality and the effects of climate change.
