RT @AschbacherJosef: 5 takeaways from ESA Council 👇
🔗Full replay in the comment section
1. ESA delivers. Q3 of 2024 saw many achievements including the foundation for lunar communication and navigation services with Moonlight, selecting a prime contractor to build the new Earth Explorer satellite duo 'Harmony', inaugurating the new lunar facility to train the astronauts of the future, 3D-printing the first metal product in space and several satellite launches such as Hera, Galileo, Sentinel-2C, AWS and Φ-sat-2.
2. This reflects just three months in the 50 year-existence of ESA, an anniversary which will be celebrated next year. As we start to reflect on all the achievements of ESA over the past half-century, we must not lower our gaze of ambition on the future, and that starts with preparations for ESA Council Ministerial 2025 and a new strategy to take us through 2040.
3. ESA presented the first steps towards a concrete ESA Strategy 2040 to Council that will define objectives for five strategic goals (1) protect our planet, (2) explore and discover, (3) strengthen European resilience, autonomy, and security, (4) boost European growth and competitiveness and (5) inspire Europe. The final strategy will be released to the public after our next Council.
4. The new strategy and preparations for #CM25 are being looked at through the lens of awareness that the European space industry is going through a critical period and ESA and its Member States must improve their profitability, something I have been championing for ever since my very first day as DG when I released ESA Agenda 2025. Council took a big and important step this week when they approved new Contracting Regulations that will allow for better transparency and streamlining of legal framework meant to better reflect the evolution of ESA as a partner to space industry in support of their competitiveness.
5. In related news, ESA Council approved the renewal of Geraldine Naja as Director of Commercialisation, Industry and Competitiveness at ESA so that she can continue on her mandate to elaborate and implement ESA’s industrial and procurement policies while boosting European space commercialisation.

RT @SimonettaCheli: I want to thank @esa Member states and Council for the continued support and trust in the @ESA_EO programme and its leadership.
I am looking forward to continuing working with Member states and ESA colleagues as we conclude a successful 2024 and start working on 2025 !"
My 5 main takeaways from 330th ESA Council 👇
1. Directors for STS, OPS, NAV & SLE are extended through December 2026, to ensure smooth preparation of #CM25 and relevant first steps of implementation. After a successful 1st term, Director for EO is renewed for another 4 years
2. ESA Delivered in 2024:
🚀Out of the launcher crisis with successful Ariane 6 and Vega-C launches
🛰️Thirteen distinct satellite missions launched
🧑🚀Two missions to the ISS with Huginn and Muninn, graduation of 5 career astronauts 🇫🇷🇨🇭🇧🇪🇬🇧🇪🇸 and 5 reserve astronauts started training 🇫🇷🇪🇸🇨🇿🇩🇪🇮🇹
3. ESA Budget for 2025 approved at 7.7 billion; could evolve as more budgets are formally confirmed at national levels
4. ESA Member States agreed to freeze the amendment to the Launchers Exploitation Declaration with ESA-developed Ariane and Vega launchers commercialised by Arianespace and Avio respectively, and Council created the European Launcher Challenge as an ESA programme, with an ITT to be published early 2025
5. Europe's achievements in space have remarkable economic value, read about the report we presented to Council here: https://t.co/NpNY7Ufl8J "- Josef Aschbacher

🇨🇦Canada has announced an additional $528.5 million investment in ESA programmes at #CM25.
In recent years, collaboration between ESA and Canada has gained remarkable momentum—opening the door for more Canadian organisations than ever before to contribute to bold international space missions. Canadian expertise is increasingly at the centre of major ESA initiatives, while Canadian companies benefit from privileged access to the European space market.
Every dollar awarded to Canadian businesses through ESA contracts generates over three dollars in follow-on sales, strengthening Canadian organisations and delivering significant value to the Canadian economy.
This is major news. As we expand our international partnerships around the globe, we are honoured by the trust Canada has placed in ESA and look forward to achieving even more together. Thank you to @melaniejoly 🇨🇦 #ESADelivers! - Josef Aschbacher ESA Earth Observation

RT @AschbacherJosef: Today and tomorrow ESA Member States will choose the space solutions that help us observe, understand and protect our planet. Their decisions will determine how space supports European industry, defence and security, when Europe returns to the Moon, and whether Europe leads in discovering extraterrestrial life and unlocking the Universe’s mysteries.
Having Commissioner @KubiliusA here both days is a clear indication that Europe’s future in space will be stronger if we stay united.
