This @CopernicusEU #Sentinel3 image shows iceberg #A23a, currently the largest in the world. #A23a calved from the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in West Antarctica in 1986, but only started to drift away from Antarctic waters recently, driven by winds and currents.

a FRESH update on the #A23a iceberg journey 🧊🗺️

Similar to many icebergs originating from the Weddell sector, A23a is likely to be expelled into the Antarctic Circumpolar Current – propelling it towards the South Atlantic along a trajectory commonly referred to as ‘iceberg alley’.
This animation uses sea-ice concentration data and shows the iceberg’s movements between 1 November 2023 to 23 January 2024.

True Color RGB images from @NOAASatellites #GOES16/#GOESEast showed #iceberg #A23a during 6 of the minimally-cloudy days so far in February - it appeared to be rotating as it slowly drifted SW toward the South Orkney Islands in the Southern Ocean.
