In May 2017, a major disinformation campaign targeted Azerbaijan, accusing it of secretly supplying weapons to terrorists.

The claims stemmed from so-called documents published by Bulgarian journalist Dilyana Gaytandzhieva, alleging that Silk Way Airlines was transporting arms via diplomatic flights. The story spread fast—even WikiLeaks shared it, and pro-Kremlin media amplified it widely.

But the truth was very different.

Azerbaijan-based channel Anewz later revealed that the operation was orchestrated by Unit 29155 of Russia’s GRU—an elite group known for assassinations.

The aim: to discredit Azerbaijan, stoke anti-Western sentiment, and divert attention from Russia’s alliance with Assad in Syria. The campaign relied on fake documents, fake accounts, and intelligence-linked journalists.

Evidence even shows Gaytandzhieva had direct contact with the GRU.
