Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Modi discussed the imposition of unilateral tariffs against their nations and reiterated plans to strengthen trade ties in a Thursday call that lasted nearly an hour, the Brazilian government said in a statement.
Although it didn’t mention Donald Trump by name, Lula’s government noted that “Brazil and India are, to date, the two countries most affected” by the wave of levies the US leader has unleashed.

Russia and India stressed their commitment to a "strategic partnership" in bilateral security talks in Moscow on Thursday, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump announced higher tariffs on imports from India because of its purchases of Russian oil.
Interfax news agency quoted Indian national security adviser Ajit Doval as saying that New Delhi was looking forward to a visit from President Vladimir Putin by the end of the year.
"We are committed to further active cooperation in order to form a new, more just and sustainable world order, ensure the supremacy of international law, and jointly combat modern challenges and threats," Shoigu told Doval in televised comments.
Interfax quoted Doval as saying: "We have now established very good relations, which we value very much, a strategic partnership between our countries".

The Ukrainian president embarked on a lightning round of calls with European leaders ahead of a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin expected soon.
As the Kremlin refused a three-way meeting with Zelenskyy and Trump, Zelenskyy said: “Ukraine is not afraid of meetings and expects the same brave approach from the Russian side.”

The Trump administration is doubling to $50 million a reward for the arrest of Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro, accusing him of being one of the world's largest narco-traffickers and working with cartels to flood the U.S. with fentanyl-laced cocaine.

Trump doubles Nicolas Maduro bounty, offers $50 million reward for arrest of Venezuela's president
Maduro was indicted in Manhattan federal court in 2020, during the first Trump presidency on federal charges of narco-terrorism and conspiracy to import cocaine.
As he pushes forward to placate feuds simmering across several regions around the globe, President Donald Trump is set to soon oversee a new peace deal between two bitter rivals in the South Caucasus.
While the details of the anticipated U.S.-backed agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan have yet to be released as the leaders of both nations meet their U.S. counterpart for a two-day summit starting Thursday, a key aspect of the deal is being referred to as the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity" (TRIPP), or simply, the "Trump Bridge."
The prospective project would link Azerbaijan's mainland to its exclave province of Nakhchivan through Armenia via a hotly contested route known in Azerbaijan as the "Zangezur corridor" and in Armenia as "Syunik road."
The deal also comes on the heels of rapid shifts in the South Caucasus, where in 2023 Azerbaijan launched a swift offensive to seize control of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, dismantling 30 years of Armenia-backed separatist rule. The defeat, which followed staggering losses from Armenia in an earlier war with Azerbaijan in 2020, has left Armenia reconsidering its regional position, including its alliance with Russia and deep-rooted rivalry with Turkey.

I look forward to hosting the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, at the White House tomorrow for a Historic Peace Summit.
These two Nations have been at War for many years, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people. Many Leaders have tried to end the War, with no success, until now, thanks to “TRUMP.”
My Administration has been engaged with both sides for quite some time. Tomorrow, President Aliyev AND Prime Minister Pashinyan will join me at the White House for an official Peace Signing Ceremony.
The United States will also sign Bilateral Agreements with both Countries to pursue Economic opportunities together, so we can fully unlock the potential of the South Caucasus Region.
I am very proud of these courageous Leaders for doing the right thing for the Great People of Armenia and Azerbaijan. It will be a Historic Day for Armenia, Azerbaijan, the United States, and, THE WORLD. See you then! DJT

More than a third of companies in Germany say they are struggling with a lack of orders, according to new data published by the ifo Institute. The July survey shows that 36.7 percent of businesses across the country are facing insufficient demand, a figure only slightly lower than in April and still far above historical norms.
“Despite slight progress, the bottom has not been reached,” said Klaus Wohlrabe, Head of Surveys at the ifo Institute. “The persistent lack of orders remains a key obstacle to a substantial economic recovery.”
The situation has deteriorated further in industry, where 38.3 percent of companies now report too few orders. In the automotive sector, that figure jumped sharply from 35.4 percent in April to 42.6 percent in July. Mechanical engineering firms are reporting a 46.1 percent shortfall, while 40.6 percent of electrical equipment manufacturers and nearly half of all metal industry businesses are also affected.
Trade is still facing broad challenges. In wholesale, 66.2 percent of firms now say they are short on orders — up from 61.7 percent in the previous quarter. In retail, the figure has risen slightly from 50.6 percent to 51.0 percent, meaning half of all retailers are struggling to maintain demand.
