✝️👶 Religion can be a powerful force to combat low birth rates. The Netherlands is mostly a secular country and has a fertility rate of just 1.43 births per woman, far below replacement. But there is a "Dutch Bible Belt" with high % of conservative Protestants…
✝️👶 Why Have Birthrates Crashed in Majority Catholic Countries?
With 2024 nearly complete, we have fertility numbers for the first three quarters of the year, and for majority-Catholic countries, the numbers are bad. The total fertility rate for Poland was 1.11 births per woman, for Spain it was 1.12, and for Italy it was 1.18. In Chile, fertility crashed to just 0.88 births per woman, a 22% drop in a year. In the historically fecund Philippines, fertility fell 23% in one year to 1.40. For reference, replacement level is 2.1.
I've been reluctant to write about this. I am close with a number of Catholic families, and I have Catholic roots on my mother's side. But these numbers are awful, and we need to understand why. Catholics are 18% of the world population, and the story of global birthrate collapse runs through Catholic countries.

China executed a former official from Inner Mongolia over corruption charges totaling about 3 billion yuan ($412 million), a rare use of the death penalty for graft that comes with President Xi Jinping’s sweeping campaign to cleanse the Communist Party intensifying.
It is rare for Chinese officials to receive the death penalty for corruption charges. More frequently they get a two-year reprieve from execution, with their sentence commuted to life imprisonment for good behavior.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department has carved out exceptions for close ally Israel that block a U.S. law restricting foreign military support over human rights abuses, a lawsuit from a group of Palestinians in Gaza and American relatives asserted Tuesday.
Former State Department officials and crafters of the 1997 Leahy law were among those advising and backing the lawsuit.
The lawsuit details the barriers that it accuses the State Department of creating on Israel’s behalf to skirt enforcement and asks courts to intervene. That is after campus protests and moves by some lawmakers failed in their goal of limiting U.S. military support to Israel over civilian deaths in Gaza during the war with Hamas.
📝 The Leahy Laws or Leahy amendments are U.S. human rights laws that prohibit the U.S. Department of State and Department of Defense from providing military assistance to foreign security force units that violate human rights with impunity.

New Maxar satellite imagery collected over the past 48 hours (December 15-17th) in Syria reveal that Russian military vehicles and equipment continue to be withdrawn from the Khmeimim airbase near Latakia and likely arrived at the nearby port of Tartus.
On December 15th, a group of military trucks, armored personnel carriers (APC) and personnel were seen assembled on the tarmac at the Khmeimim airbase. An Il-76 transport aircraft was parked nearby the equipment and several additional transport aircraft were also seen at the airbase.
In likely related activity, on this morning’s imagery (December 17th) a group of military trucks and APC had arrived and were positioned in the military section of the Tartus port facilities. No military or transport-associated ships were seen at the port that would probably be used for loading the vehicles/equipment

Houthis call for conference to discuss Red Sea navigation.
The Houthi rebel group, responsible for launching dozens of attacks on commercial vessels and the deaths of four seafarers in the last year, is planning a seminar and webinar on “security of navigation in the Red Sea” – and it wants some ideas.
In an email to TradeWinds, the group has asked for topics for its agenda and insights to “enrich the discussion” at an unspecified venue and date.
The email was sent by an events manager for the Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center (Hocc), the body that has sent emails to shipping companies threatening attacks.

The European Union is forging ahead with plans for a constellation of internet satellites to rival Elon Musk-owned Starlink, after signing a €10.6 billion ($11.1 billion) deal to launch nearly 300 satellites into low- and medium-Earth orbits by 2030. The bloc wants the space tech to boost its digital sovereignty by providing secure comms to governments.
Musk’s Starlink, meanwhile, already has some 6,000 satellites in orbit, recently passed 4 million subscribers, and has major deals with the likes of Royal Caribbean and United Airlines. It’s also gearing up to launch a direct-to-phone service with T-Mobile.

📚 How well did different states do on the NAEP after adjusting for demographics?
Mississippi and Florida tied for the #2 spot, not far behind Massachusetts.
These are test score rankings adjusted for gender, age, race/ethnicity, receipt of free and reduced-price school lunch, special education status, and English language learner status
They suggest a very different picture than the one we usually get, where the northeast dominates

Human cases of H5N1 bird flu
On this page you’ll find detailed information about each human case of H5N1 bird flu since 2020, when a new variant (clade 2.3.4.4b) emerged in birds and spread around the world, eventually reaching every continent except Oceania. This page is updated regularly and as soon as possible when a human case is reported.
The current variant of concern has affected a growing number of mammals since it was first discovered. The first human case with clade 2.3.4.4b was reported in the UK in January 2022. Older variants are also capable of causing human cases, including clade 2.3.2.1c, which is endemic in Cambodia.
