🇬🇧 Race riots put Britain on collision course with Elon Musk

Britain’s government has social platforms in its sights as incitement spreads — and the X owner is squaring up for a fight.

The billionaire X owner sparked fury in the British government this weekend after he responded to incendiary footage of the far-right disorder that's sweeping the country by saying "civil war is inevitable."

The post on X was roundly condemned by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office, which said there was “no justification” for Musk’s comments.

But Musk doubled, then tripled down on Monday night. Responding to a statement from Starmer vowing his government would “not tolerate attacks on mosques or on Muslim communities,” the X boss effectively accused the British prime minister of wearing blinkers. “Shouldn’t you be concerned about attacks on all communities?” Policing of the unrest "does seem one-sided," he offered in a third post.

Starmer's top interior minister, Yvette Cooper, meanwhile has a litany of complaints over the way social media giants like X are policing incitement and disinformation on their platforms.

“There are some things which are clearly already criminal, where we'll need police intervention and action to pursue those," Cooper told the BBC Monday. "There are other areas where the social media companies do have clear requirements at the moment to remove criminal material, and should be doing so, but sometimes take too long to do so.

"There are other areas where they have made commitments around their terms and conditions that are supposed to be enforced but are not being done so."

Cooper's vowed to take up the issue with tech giants this week.

Yet, despite plenty of hand-wringing over the proliferation of far-right messaging, Britain's toolbox for forcing the hands of social media companies seems limited.

🏳️🇺🇸 🇳🇪 U.S. Military withdraws from Niger 🏴 From now on their shadow over key Islamic State points in West Africa truly dissapears. 💥 All amid signs ISGS and ISWAP want to transform Niger into battlefield and are actively building momentum. Hubris and…
🇺🇸 🇳🇪 🏴 Terror groups poised to fill void with US forces gone from Niger

🔶️ The U.S. abandonment this week of its $110 million drone base in Niger, once seen as a key hub for counterterrorism efforts, adds to a growing list of Western withdrawals, all steadily ceding ground to terror groups affiliated with Islamic State and al-Qaida.

🔶️ The U.S. withdrawal follows the pullout of French forces from Niger late last year and from neighboring Mali in 2022. A five-country alliance to fight terror groups across the Sahel, likewise, collapsed in recent years.

🔶️ And intelligence gathered by United Nations member states suggests the terror groups those Western forces were hoping to curtail have made the most of their growing absence.

🔶️ “What we're witnessing right now is the direct consequence of all the coups in the region and the fact that all these troops have been driven out — the French, Belgians, MINUSMA [United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali], African Union, the Americans,” said Pieter Van Ostaeyen, a Belgian Arabist who studies Islamic extremism.

🔶️ “It's like a carousel won't stop,” he told VOA. “It's like a downward spiral.”

🇬🇧 In Chester, two people were arrested for a post on Snapchat, where they allegedly called on people to participate in a protest near a migrant hotel.

A 32-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman are accused of "racial harassment with the intent to cause fear and violence".

According to the Chester police statement, their post contained information that several illegal immigrants were staying at the hotel. The law enforcement believes this information could have provoked unrest at their place of residence.

Apparently, these are the methods of combating misinformation on the internet that Keir Starmer had in mind when he promised a "tough response". So far, there is nothing democratic about this.

"This Recession is Old News to Women"

New White Papers contributor Vivian P tackles the recent economic instability from the perspective of America's women, wives, and mothers.

For years grocery prices have increased, in some cases by more than 11% a year (2022).

Gas prices have been stuck at elevated rates since May of 2021.

All the while women are facing large-scale layoffs, especially in the tech sector where work-life balance was the most manageable for working mothers.

And it is the credit card and savings of women that absorb economic hits first.

With economy precarity comes higher rates of divorce, more family breakdown, and concerning jumps in the amount of domestic abuse.

Ultimately Vivian asks: If the elite, who are just now panicking about the economy, know these facts why have they allowed this system to continue in its current form. What do they have against women?

🇺🇸 🇦🇺 🇨🇳 US military eyes Australia's Indian Ocean toehold to deter China

🔶️ A remote Australian island close to an Indian Ocean chokepoint for Chinese oil shipments is on a list of possible locations for US military construction aimed at deterring China, with the US saying it "may or may not" support American forces.

🔶️ Australia's Cocos Islands is listed along with the Philippines, Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea for anticipated construction projects under the Pacific Deterrence Initiative, designed to enhance US force posture and infrastructure to counter China.

🔶️ Cocos Islands is closer to the Strait of Malacca, a chokepoint for half of China's oil shipments, than the US Navy base of Diego Garcia, a launch pad for US bombers in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, but whose long-term future is under a cloud.

🇧🇩 🇮🇳 🇨🇳 Sheikh Hasina's fall in Bangladesh worries neighboring India.

-Hasina has been India's closest geopolitical partner
-From economics to counter-terrorism, Hasina has been comfortable working with India in a way few other Bangladeshi leaders have
-The country's other most powerful party is the Bangladesh Nationalist Party

🔶️ The BNP was seen as unhelpful to India's security as it refused to track down on militant groups like ULFA

-The BNP has also relied on closer ties with Pakistan and China and can be suspicious of India
-It has also allied with Islamist groups in the past, which India opposes
-If the BNP comes to power, a lot of India's ambitious economic projects could grind to a halt

Bangladesh could also tilt to China given its historic distrust of India

🚢 🇺🇸 A decade ago, Special Operations Command began quietly converting a modern roll-on, roll-off cargo ship into a highly customized, cutting-edge, clandestine command center, mobile mothership, & forward sea base.

🔶️ MV Ocean Trader has the capability to house a total of 209 special warfighting personnel, enough stores and provisions for 45 days of operations and the capability to refuel and replenish at sea, along with capacity to launch, recover, refuel, and resupply up to four small craft, including UAVs.

🔶️ She includes a flight deck rated for day and night operation of Chinooks, Seahawks, Blackhawks, Kiowas, Apaches, Ospreys, Sea Stallions and Little Birds. There is storage and launch capability via the stern ramp for Zodiacs, RHIBs and jet skis.

🔶️ The ship contains all the command and control and food services. A ship, forward deployed for over a year, can easily disappear amid an ocean filled with commercial shipping.”

🔶️ MV Ocean Trader is not a commissioned vessel in the U.S. Navy, or owned by the government, but leased from one of the largest ship operators, & chartered by the Military Sealift Command.

🇬🇧 A month ago, the British government announced an overcrowding of British prisons and that it was thinking of releasing inmates early.

Now, the government is scrambling to find enough cells inside its prisons to house all the people they sentence in the Southport riots.
