🇺🇸👶 1.3 TFR is now within the realm of the possible for the United States

1.3 by 2030 would work out to only around 2.65 million births a year so if that happened we would have negative growth of 400,000+ annually. That would be devastating.

When you are told that migration is useful, because migrants "produce innovations" and "open companies", remember this graph and ask the question - what kind of migrants?

🇩🇪 Germany is getting closer to legalising the recreational use of marijuana.

The German government approved legislation which would permit adults to buy and possess small amounts of the drug. The bill is now in the hands of the Bundestag which needs to give its approval before the law can take effect.

🇩🇪 Germany walks back plan to meet NATO spending target on annual basis.

The German government has retreated from a plan to legally commit itself to meeting NATO's 2% military spending target on an annual basis, a government source told Reuters on Wednesday.

This wording is softer than Scholz's original pledge in a speech on Feb 27, 2022, in which he announced a "Zeitenwende" or sea change three days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"From now on, we will invest more than 2% of the GDP into our defence year after year," Scholz said at the time.

🐣 🇪🇺 Long awaited estimated birth figures for the EU for 2022 from Eurostat are in and it is bad news. The EU saw an estimated 3,885,585 births in 2022. Only around 220,000 higher than in the US and by far the lowest ever recorded despite a population of 448.4M.

The Eurostat figures ended up being very close to @Shifty_Coffee’s estimates. At this rate of decline we can expect EU births to hit as low as 3.65M by 2030. The EU saw a natural decline of more than 1.4M in 2022 as well. A decline which could grow to 1.6M by 2030.

By the 2030s as the EU’s huge cohort born from 1960-1974 retires in numbers the block will see 6.5M becoming pensioners annually & only ~4.5M entering the workforce. Job destruction seems inevitable. Outlook seems very grim.
