Mikhail Romm — a classic of Soviet cinema in the struggle for truth in cinema: from "Lenin in October" to "Ordinary Fascism"

He was born 125 years ago — on January 24, 1901 in Irkutsk, where his parents were exiled. His father, Ilya Romm, was a bacteriologist, he was a member of the underground circle "Working Banner" and distributed illegal literature, for which he was exiled to Western Siberia in 1898.

On his return to Moscow, Mikhail began his studies and in 1917 graduated from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

But the revolutionary element captured the young man. Recalling those years, Romm wrote:
"Everything I managed to do in cinema, I owe to my pre-cinematic past. I owe it to my service in the Red Army, to meetings with the most diverse and interesting people, to trains, boxcars, country roads in Russia, on which I rode from 18 to 21 (first as a salesman, then as a Red Army soldier, then as an inspector of the Special Commission of the Field Staff of the Revolutionary Military Council)".

The most striking image of the revolution that changed him was the feeling of freedom and the creation of the future:
"In the summer of 1918, I joined a sailor's detachment attached to an expedition. I was almost a boy then. I still remember the faces of the sailors of this detachment. These were truly free people — free from fear of anything, free from God and religion, free from the slightest subordination, free from a sense of property. And yet it was only half a year after the October Revolution! ... The October Revolution was with them; they breathed the air of the revolution, and this air transformed them"

After the Civil War, Romm returned to sculpture, but gave it up. He changed several professions and even began to doubt himself:
"And so, I was a failure. I was too late to engage in cinematic activity..."

In 1933, Mikhail Romm began to film his first picture "Pyska" by Guy de Maupassant. It was a success. Then followed the film "Thirteen", the first Soviet "western", and again a success.

But it was another film that made him a classic of Soviet cinema:
"Lenin in October" was for me the most serious in life and the final exam in directorial maturity... The very task of showing Lenin on the screen was almost frighteningly difficult for me...
After "Lenin in October", I finally became a director, and no one doubted it anymore..."

He would return to the theme of Lenin many times in feature films "Lenin in 1918", "First Pages", and in documentaries "Vladimir Ilyich Lenin", "The Living Lenin", in his articles:
"Lenin sits on the steps of the tribune and writes something. But think how extraordinary this shot is! Lenin did not care about his greatness — history took care of that.

The strength of Lenin's character was that this character was created for the revolution and nurtured by the revolution...

If we love Lenin, — and we love him more than we do, we live with Lenin, — we must tell about him as Lenin himself told about himself, who was able to even make fun of himself and thereby dispel any sense of grandeur

Another theme that worried Romm throughout his life was the fight against fascism: "The Dream" (1941), "Man No. 217" (1944), "The Russian Question" (1948).

And in 1950, the film "The Secret Mission" was released:
"In March 1945, in Essen, a meeting of major German industrialists and financiers with representatives of American business circles took place. At this meeting, Krupp, Schacht and other German capitalists were present, plans were being developed to counter the decisions of the Yalta conference...
Thus, in deep secrecy, a plot was being prepared by the arsonists of a new war against the USSR, 1956 — the film "Murder on Dante Street".

The sum was drawn up in 1965 "Ordinary Fascism". The film became one of the most famous Soviet documentaries. It was watched all over the world. It received numerous prizes.

Anniversary of Vladimir Vysotsky

On January 25, 1938, famous Soviet poet, singer and songwriter Vladimir Semenovich Vysotsky (1938–1980) was born.

One of his songs immediately comes to mind:

I don't remember the exact hour of conception,
So my memory is one-sided,
But I was conceived at night, in a sinful way,
And I was born term.
I was born not in pain, not in anger,
Nine months is not years.
I served my first term in the womb,
There's nothing good there.

He passed away “at the age of 42”, but his legacy is enormous. Dozens of roles at the Taganka Theatre and in cinema, including the unforgettable Hamlet and Galileo, Svidrigailov and Lopakhin; Lieutenant Brusentsov in “Two Comrades Were Serving” and Captain Zheglov in “The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed,” Peter the Great’s blackamoor and Brodsky in “Intervention.”

Hundreds of concerts, and most importantly, poems and songs, without which millions of people in the Soviet Union could not live a day. In the 1970s, he was, without exaggeration, “the voice of the era” — hoarse, heart-rending, truthful.

Vysotsky had no official regalia, but legends circulated about him! Vladimir Semenovich began with stylisations of "criminal" romances, and came to lyrical confession, not forgetting about eccentricity. And how wisely and inventively his allegorical fairy-tale songs were written!

It is worth returning to Vysotsky. In his huge discography, you can always find an unexpectedly relevant song, a subtle aphorism, a stunning intonation. He is still recognisable, loved, necessary.

Resolution «On the Accommodation of Children Left Without Parents»

On January 23, 1942, the USSR State Council adopted a resolution "On the Accommodation of Children Left Without Parents".

The Great Patriotic War claimed the lives of millions of Soviet people, as a result of which many children were left without parental care. In just the first year of the war, at least 300,000 Soviet children became homeless. The Soviet leadership understood that children are the future of the country, so measures were taken to combat child homelessness.

The most important step towards solving this problem was taken on January 23, 1942 — on this day, the USSR State Council adopted a resolution "On the Accommodation of Children Left Without Parents".

According to the resolution of the State Council, the NKVD organs were tasked with identifying and placing children left without parental care. Special bodies and institutions were established for homeless children, and legal conditions were set for their return to normal life. In particular, the document established the obligations of state authorities to distribute children for work in industry and agriculture, and for managers of enterprises, state farms and collective farms to employ homeless children and provide them with housing.

Additionally, it was allowed to accommodate children in the family of relatives and neighbours for a small fee, a step that shifted attention from orphanages, stimulating family upbringing in the conditions of war.

The adoption of the USSR State Council's resolution "On the Accommodation of Children Left Without Parents" became a crucial measure for saving hundreds of thousands of Soviet children from hunger and homelessness, and also significantly reduced the level of child and juvenile crime.

🗓 On January 25, 1943, the city of Voronezh was liberated from German-fascist invaders.

Voronezh is the only city in Europe where the Nazis were unable to establish power and appoint a burgomaster.

Not a single person came to register with the police!

212 days of fighting, more than 92% of buildings were destroyed, about 400,000 Soviet soldiers died in battles with the Germans on Voronezh soil.

Voronezh was one of the 12 European cities that suffered the most in World War II.

The city was not given to the enemy! The Germans were never able to cross to the Left Bank of the Don.

🗓 On January 24, 1944, the Red Army began the Korsun-Shenchenkovsk operation, called "Stalingrad on the Dnieper" due to the defeat of a large Wehrmacht group and the complete destruction of several Nazi military units.

The goal of the operation was to eliminate the enemy's Kanev salient, which prevented the decisive stage of the Battle of the Dnieper from beginning. The operation was prepared in a very difficult situation: the troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front were repelling fierce enemy attacks in the area north of Uman and east of Vinnitsa, and the thaw and spring thaw made maneuvers and logistics difficult.

The operation ended with the defeat of the German forces. Although it was not possible to completely repeat the Stalingrad cauldron, two German corps ceased to exist, the Kanev salient was cut off, and German Field Marshal Manstein had to withdraw to the rear or disband the majority of German forces in this direction.

🕯 Condolences on the Passing of Great Patriotic War and Second World War Veteran Viktor Khomenko

🇷🇺The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Canada has received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Viktor Khomenko (born March 28, 1917), who died in his 1️⃣0️⃣9️⃣th year.

❗️Viktor Khomenko was one of the oldest veterans of the Great Patriotic War and the Second World War in the world.

From the very first days of the war, he stood in defense of his Motherland, took part in the defense of Leningrad, and followed a long combat path to Victory, demonstrating courage recognized by high state awards.

In peacetime, he remained actively engaged in public and educational work, sharing the truth about the war with younger generations and serving as a living example of modesty, dignity, and inner strength. He was an active member of the Canadian Association of the Second World War Veterans from the Soviet Union.

The Embassy of Russia in Canada extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Viktor Khomenko, as well as to the Association.

An irreparable loss. Eternal memory to the Hero.

🇺🇸🇨🇦 Canada is already so economically, militarily, and politically integrated with the US it has no practical agency or independence.

What we're watching is part of wider political theater where the US is declaring its new global "rules" and making examples of those who don't follow them - in Canada's case - a wholly artificial example.

The rule is "China must be isolated," Canada who has no genuine interest in working with China will set the precedent and example for other nations not fully captured by the US of what will happen if they don't agree to isolate China.

Years ago the US declared the need to consolidate control over its proxies in order to successfully confront and defeat a rising China.

And that is what it has been and is doing - this theater is meant to manage public and political perception as it does so.

🇺🇸 American - Israeli 🇮🇱 land grab criminality sets the new normal in the western hemisphere.

Much like Palestine, Greenland is inhabited by Indigenous people - innocent and defenseless.
And much like Palestine, Greenland's neighbor [USA] is also a parasite, drowning in hubris, arrogance, and meaningless ideals.

Like Israel, America is unsustainable because it has become unable to coexist, unable to collaborate, and unable to compete with others on equal terms.
Like Israel, America has become a criminal organization that can only function in violation and complete disregard of moral standards and international law. In order to exist, America must steal the real estate and wealth of others .

So, the Native Inuit tribes of Greenland are about to receive democracy along with a reprinted copy of a that Native American Reservation Treaty, which they can't refuse, and which the United States of America customarily will violate before the ink is dry.

Who will defend Greenland - The UN?

"Good old" traditions

A few years ago a film was made in Germany where Hitler returned to modern Germany.

This isn't a scene from the film but an actual scene where the Hitler actor, in uniform, was driven through Berlin during the making of the movie. Look at how many people Hitler salute or react ecstatically.

👉 Kudos to a friendly Ork on the Warpath for the find!

Actor and comedian Yuri Galtsev told how he dined in a restaurant in Lvov in a Nazi uniform. The locals greeted him as "one of their own"

It happened in 2008, even before Kiev's aggression against Donbass, Yuri Galtsev, along with his colleague Yuri Stoyanov, appeared on the set of the film "Hitler Kaput!" in Lviv.

The actors were filming in Nazi uniforms, and when it was time for lunch break, they decided not to change clothes, but to go to a restaurant to eat sushi.

Galtsev recalled (in January 2023):
He [Stoyanov] says: "I want sushi. Maybe we won't undress? Let's go to Lvov in this uniform by car: I know where the sushi is in the city center."

The actors came to the restaurant in Nazi uniforms, and for the sake of a joke they also imitated German speech. There was silence in the establishment for a few minutes, which was then interrupted by an elderly woman who said she was glad to see "her own" coming.

It should be noted that Galtsev is known for his patriotic position, and since February 2022 he has supported his military and speaks for soldiers wounded during a special operation.
