Direct Doctorate Fellowship in Yeast Molecular Genetics

A Direct Doctorate (PhD) scholarship funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) is available at the Bioenergy Research Institute (IPBEN) affiliated with Rio Claro Biosciences Institute of São Paulo State University (IBRC-UNESP) under the mentoring of Dr. Ana Paula Jacobus (www.yeastevolution.com).

The selected candidate will develope research in the context of the Young Researcher project “Collaboration Network: Modern Genetic Approaches to Enhance Yeast Tolerance to Enriched Lignocellulosic Hydrolysates”. This project raises the question of how tolerance to lignocellulosic hydrolysate inhibitors used in the production of second generation ethanol, can be improved in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by the use of modern tools of molecular genetics and synthetic biology.

To address this important issue, we established a collaborative axis between the groups belonging to the Bioenergy Research Institute (IPBEN, UNESP), the Brazilian Laboratory of Ethanol Science and Technology (CTBE), University of São Paulo USP) and the University of Queensland, Australia. Experimental approaches such as alternative protocols for adaptive laboratory evolution, mapping of quantitative traits, new generation sequencing, flow cytometry assisted competition and phenotyping tests will be used to discover the genetic basis of yeast tolerance to the hydrolysate rich in inhibitors (LCH) of sugarcane bagasse. Thus, using modern molecular genetic tools and the CRISPR / Cas9 genome editing technology, a yeast strain resistant to the toxicity of the lignocellulosic hydrolysates will be constructed and suitable for the production of cellulosic ethanol.

Requirements

The candidate for the Direct Doctorate position must have, or be finishing, graduation in areas related to biology, microbiology, genetics or biochemistry. In compliance with the rules of FAPESP (http://www.fapesp.br/278#6), the candidate must have a graduation recently completed and within the normal term, with an excellent academic record and, preferably, successful stage of Scientific Initiation. Alternatively, the candidate can be transferred from the MSc to PhD. Candidates with full masters cannot be considered.

The selected student will be enrolled in the integrated Bioenergy Doctoral program offered jointly by the three main universities of São Paulo (UNESP / UNICAMP / USP). Therefore, the candidate must conform to the formal selection criteria required for joining the program (http://sites.usp.br/phdbioenergy/applications/). The PhD program in Bioenergy is internationally oriented with classes lectured in English by videoconference.

Job description
To meet the goals of the Dutch climate agreement the industry will need to greatly reduce their greenhouse emissions. One way of doing this is by reducing the energy requirements for the different industrial processes. Of these processes, the drying process is especially energy intensive. A method that is often used in the food industry is spray-drying. This is a method where the fluid is sprayed through hot air in order for it to dry. It is used to turn, for example, fluid milk products into functional powders. By developing a fundamental understanding of the complex fluid dynamics inside the nozzle as well as in the liquid sheet breakup, the EEMS project aims to formulate recommendations for design and operational principles to optimise the spray drying process. "EEMS”, which stands for Energy Efficient Milky Sprays, is a collaboration of the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology, Friesland Campina, Danone/Nutricia, DSM and TU/e. Together they will study the effects of high solids content and of the main constituent components of model liquids on atomization efficiency of the nozzle. Ultimately this will lead to recommendations for design and operational principles to optimise the spray drying process.

Two Ph.D. positions and a PostDoc position are available in the group of Dr. Thomas Barends at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg. The positions are funded by the European Research Council.

Successful applicants will join an international, interdisciplinary team to work on the elucidation of the biosynthesis pathway of ladderane lipids. Ladderanes are highly unusual hydrocarbon moieties with linearly concatenated cyclobutane rings, found in the membranes of bacteria performing anaerobic ammonium oxidation (“anammox”).

How these complicated molecules are produced is unknown: How do the enzymes involved assemble such intricate carbon skeletons? How do they control the complex stereochemistry involved? How do they overcome the ring strain inherent in these molecules? The successful candidates will be answering these questions using an array of methods including biochemistry, chemical biology, metabolomics and structural biology.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (a Ph.D. degree for the PostDoc position) or equivalent in chemistry, biochemistry or biology and enjoy practical lab work. The available topics are diverse but include iron-sulfur cluster proteins and lipidomics, so candidates with experience in these fields are particularly invited to apply.

PhD Position: The changing meaning of retirement - Deadline: 2 June

It has been frequently argued that babyboom cohorts have different needs and ambitions for retirement than earlier generations, and that they will even ‘redefine’ or ‘reinvent’ retirement. This PhD project will examine older adults’ pre-retirement preferences with respect to their future life, as well as their post retirement activities. The project will make use of the NIDI Pension Panel Survey (NPPS) in which more than 5.000, 60-plus older workers are followed in their transition to retirement.

This PhD project is part of the project “Ageing workers in an ageing society: Labour force transitions and work in late life” and is funded Netspar and NWO. The PhD project is based at NIDI in The Hague. The PhD candidate will write a dissertation, based on a set of research articles, publishable in international refereed journals.

Post-doc and MRes positions in Computer Vision

A post-doc position is available to work on an exciting, cross-disciplinary collaborative project (UK-India research collaboration) to develop advanced computer vision and deep learning algorithms for monitoring and anticipating driver’s activities (Deadline: 02/06/2019). There are also two MRes studentships to carry out research in computer vision and deep learning, focusing on human activity recognition and monitoring. PhD opportunity – Robotics in off-site prefabrication of buildings

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD within the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University.

The PhD Project

Prefabrication has the advantages of simplicity, speed and economy but has been inflexible to changes in design which is a primary reason behind its limited market share in the construction industry. To tackle this drawback, there is need for research to develop a Robotic Prefabrication System (RPS) which employs a new concept towards automatic construction of a prefabricated structure. The RPS will consist of a software module and a hardware module. First, the software employs the 3D model of a prefabricated structure as input, and returns motor control command output to the hardware. There are numerous underlying algorithms developed in the software module. For example, a novel algorithm will computes the optimal fabrication sequence to transform one model into another according to the differences identified. Meanwhile, the hardware module takes the motor control commands as input and executes the appropriate assembly/disassembly operations, and returns the desired structure in real-time.

Validation tests on lab-scaled prefabricated structures will demonstrate the ability of the system to successfully generate desired fabrication sequences and perform all assembly operations with acceptable placement precision.

This PhD will leverage the latest technologies, data science and AI in the development of new building processes and techniques. This will enable the application of robotics to optimise all phases of building delivery.

The Opportunity

Scholarship covering tuition fees and providing a tax-free stipend (approximately $29,000/year) for 3 years is potentially available for either local or international students. There is potential for successful applicants to earn around $3,000 per annum through assisting in undergraduate teaching. Students are given financial support to attend an international conference during their
PhD.

Selection Criteria

The student will need to meet the following criteria:

Masters or Bachelor (H1 Honours) in Engineering (majoring in Civil, Mechanical, Electronics, or Aerospace Engineering, etc.);
An excellent academic record (GPA>90%);
Excellent English – Academic IELTS: minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no skill
less than 6.0; and
Proficiency in the Robot Operating System (ROS)
