We are seeking candidates for working on the project  "Liguria 4P Health - Predictive, Personalized, Preventive, Participatory Healthcare" (POR-FESR Liguria).  Primary aim of the project is the development of innovative systems for the technological support to the design of personalized healthcare assistance, with specific reference to fragile population.
In this context, the proposed job will focus on data analysis functionalities in an end-to-end distributed system. Key elements of this work will be the development and integration of information processing methods based on time series analysis and Machine Learning. The large availability of structured, heterogeneous and temporal data will be the trigger for the design of methods to learn models that will be the basis of knowledge used by clinicians to devise personalized and preventive data-driven healthcare. 

All the research activities will be carried out at the University of Genova within a newly formed  machine learning center across the Mathematics and Computer  Science departments (ml.unige.it). 

The  center counts  over 10 faculties and 30 between PhD students + postdocs and provides a lively and dynamic work environment.

*Requirements*

A master degree in Computer Science or equivalent is required. Although not mandatory, a PhD degree would be an add-on. Fluency in written and spoken English is also required. For the themes considered in the project, a background in time series analysis and Machine Learning is needed.

This project will investigate the natural, physiological phenomenon known as heart rate variability (HRV). HRV arises from the regulatory activities of the autonomic nervous system which causes fluctuations in heart rate (HR) over short and long timescales. It is important to better understand the characteristics of HRV, and to develop accurate and robust systems for automatic control of HR for various exercise modalities such as cycle ergometry and treadmill exercise. This is because HR is a convenient-to-use variable that is widely adopted to characterise exercise intensity and to prescribe exercise-training and rehabilitation programmes.

The principal aim of the project is to elucidate and better understand the characteristics of HRV during prolonged exercise and to use this knowledge to optimise the design of automatic HR control systems. To achieve this aim, we will investigate changes in HRV in relation to exercise intensity and duration, we will develop dynamics models and controllers for HR, and we will carry out a clinical feasibility study of HR control in patients with neurological impairment following stroke.

We use machine learning, AI and robotics to develop new methods for chemical sensing (electronic noses), gas-based navigation in robots, and knowledge discovery in chemical space.

Our group leverages a new kind of computing hardware, so called neuromorphic systems, to translate processes from the brain into algorithms for efficient computing. We take inspiration from neuroscience to develop massively parallel, event-based, and power-efficient algorithms for machine learning, inference and control.

Possible project topics include:
* Bio-inspired signal processing and pattern recognition for chemical sensing,
* Gas-based navigation for robots,
* Deep learning for fragrance and aroma discovery,

This position will involve preprocessing raw data and extracting relevant features for the subsequent classification task, in collaboration with researchers from the IADI and the IECL.

Candidate profile: PhD in signal processing/applied mathematics or a related field with a solid background in statistics. Good programming and data manipulation skills are expected. Knowledge of machine learning would be appreciated, as would an interest for medical applications and interdisciplinary research.

DEEP LEARNING POSTDOC POSITIONS IN LIFELONG LEARNING AND GENERATIVE MODELS IN BARCELONA

We are seeking a postdoc to join the Learning and Machine Perception (LAMP) team in beautiful Barcelona.

The position is for 2 years (with an optional 1-year extension). The position will remain open until a good candidate is found. LAMP is in the Computer Vision Center at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and performs research on active learning, continual learning, few-shot learning, generative models, encoder-decoder networks, self-supervised learning, etc.
The position is on an industrial sponsored project with 2 postdocs and four PhD students. The subjects include lifelong learning (continual learning), generative models, network compression, multi-model data representation learning.

CANDIDATE ’S PROFILE
The candidate should possess a PhD in computer vision or machine learning, and have a strong publication record. We are looking for candidates who have publications in the top conferences CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, NIPS, ICML, or ICLR. The candidate should have a background in machine learning and deep learning. The applicants are expected to be fluent in both oral and written communication in English. They should work well in a team while demonstrating initiative and independence. The candidate is expected to supervise PhD students.
