The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of landscapes and habitats, and a responsible approach to natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 500 people, of whom 140 work at SLF in Davos.

The Research Unit Snow and Permafrost investigates the behavior of snow, soil and permafrost and interactions with the atmosphere. The group Snow Physics develops experimental and theoretical methods to understand the physical properties of snow from its (changing) microstructure. We are offering a
PhD position – Modeling snow micro-mechanics
The SNSF project “Unifying metamorphism, heat and mechanics for microstructure based snow modeling” hosts 2 PhD sub-projects on the investigation of microstructural processes of snow in view of a unified description of physical properties at the macro-scale.
In the present sub-project, you will be responsible for investigating the interplay of (geometrical) microstructure and macroscopic elasto-visco-plastic material behavior of snow under low strain rates. You will employ microstructure-based mechanical simulations and compare it to existing 4D tomography data that were acquired in time-lapse, micro-compression experiment. You will develop approximations for a microstructure-based constitutive law that meets the requirements of next generation 1D snowpack models.
You hold a Master’s degree in physics or material science (or equivalent). A proven background in mechanics of (complex) materials and experience in numerical simulations are mandatory while additional task-specific qualifications are an advantage. You can demonstrate your competence in written English (e.g. in form of a thesis). Finally, you are expected to be a team player with excellent communication skills for a vivid exchange with the other PhD candidate and for the collaboration with external co-workers in the project.

PhD Position in Enzyme Engineering - enzyme-based biosensors for use in biotechnological applications

Project Description
In the Laboratory for Enzyme Engineering and Evolution, we are interested in questions at the intersection of biochemistry and evolutionary biology. What were the structures, functions and mechanisms of enzymes in the ‘primordial soup’? What mutations are required to change an enzyme with one function into another? And how can we use insights from evolution to design proteins with biomedical and biotechnological applications?

Dr. Wayne Patrick is currently seeking 1-2 enthusiastic and hard-working PhD students to join his group.

In this project, you will design and build enzyme-based biosensors for use in biotechnological (but not biomedical) applications. This project is in collaboration with Molecular Warehouse (http://molecularwarehouse.com/). You will use protein biochemistry, site-directed mutagenesis, protein design and a variety of assay/detection methods.

A background in (and fascination with) protein biochemistry is essential, while experience in biomolecular chemistry, microbiology and/or relevant areas of biotechnology would also be beneficial.

PhD Position on Drivers of Sustainability at Eindhoven University of Technology

The PhD position is a collaboration of the Technology, Innovation and Society group and the Operations, Planning, Accounting and Control group at the of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences, Eindhoven University of Technology. It is part of a larger research effort to better understand how sustainability issues in the Netherlands and the Global South have become interrelated through the development of transcontinental supply chains. We invite applications for a 4-year fully funded PhD position starting at the latest in April 2019.

Research content

Neither sustainability issues in the Netherlands, nor sustainability issues in the Global South, should be studied in geographical isolation. Through the development of transcontinental supply chains, (un)sustainable developments in the Netherlands and the Global South have become entangled. The fruit, flowers, and plants trade is a case in point. After the 1970s, the Netherlands has gradually emerged as a dominant hub in the international trade of these commodities with links to North and East Africa in particular. At present, business as well as governments strive to make this trade more transparent and sustainable. However, information on historically grown sustainability relations and issues is sorely missing.

Postdoctoral Position in Spatial Epidemiology of Antimicrobial Resistance (100%)

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) – the ability of microbes to evolve and resist treatment – is rising globally. In September 2016, the United Nations General Assembly declared AMR “the most urgent global risk”, and mandated its member states to establish national action plans against AMR, including improvements to epidemiological surveillance systems. This position is part of a project funded by the join programming initiative on AMR to improve surveillance in low- and middle-income countries.

We are looking for an enthusiast and quantitatively minded candidate to work on the spatial association between antimicrobial use and resistance in pig farms in Thailand. This is a fixed term position for two 2 years with an anticipated start date on February 1st 2019. The position is based at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. The successful candidate will join the newly formed spatial epidemiology group led by Thomas Van Boeckel.
We welcome applicants with: (1) A background in veterinary sciences, epidemiology, quantitative geography. (2) Experience with regression models, geostatistics, species distribution models. PhD Position with A Research Focus on Image Analysis and Transport Properties in Freeze Drying

The Chair of Process Systems Engineering at Technical University of Munich (location at TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan, Freising) is seeking from Jan 2019 a doctoral research assistant with a focus on image analysis and transport properties of porous materials with regard to freeze drying.

Project
Drying is an important unit operation with the aim of facilitating transport, handling and shelf life. Freeze drying is an expensive drying technology for pharmaceuticals and high-value foods. The efficiency of the freeze drying process is strongly dependent on the pore structure. Therefore, the impact of pore structure on the drying front and kinetics should be investigated. Furthermore, possibilities to influence the pore structure by the freezing process shall be investigated. The pore structure will be analysed by x-Ray computed tomography and image analysis. Based on the pore structure, a pore network model will be developed by our cooperation partner of OVGU Magdeburg. The model will be validated at TUM by measurements with a freeze drying microscope.
Your profile
A qualified candidate has good communication skills, interest in interdisciplinary work and collaboration with the partner as well as a high motivation for image analysis and transport properties in porous media. A degree in chemical/process/food or bioprocess engineering, physics or a similar field with above-average grades is required. Experience in image analysis, freeze drying and transport in porous systems is advantageous.

We are looking for two highly capable, eager, and intrinsically motivated PhD candidates. The projects are embedded in the Developmental Psychobiology Lab at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior in Nijmegen (the Netherlands). These positions are funded by a personal VICI grant awarded to Prof. Carolina de Weerth and funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The grant is on healthy children’s gut microbial colonization in relation to stress early in life and later brain functioning, behavior, and cognition.

PhD 1: The aim of this project is to test a new psychobiological model of human development within an ongoing longitudinal study in healthy children. In th​is study, we will study the independent and potentially combined contributions of stress and microbiota in early life and in adolescence on brain structure, brain function, behavior problems, and cognitive capacities.

PhD 2: The aim of this project is to study two potential causal mechanisms through which maternal psychological stress, as an early life stress-inducing factor, can negatively affect infant microbial colonization and development. For this study, pregnant mothers and their infants will be followed from mid-pregnancy until the child reaches age 1.

Over the recent years, brain computer interfaces (BCIs) have improved steadily, both from advances in algorithms and in hardware. BCIs based on high time resolution electroencephalography (EEG) have a great potential in a wide area of applications. The overarching idea in this project is to apply a tight feedback loop around the complete individualized BCI learning process. By connecting all stages of the learning process, including feature extraction from the input brain data to the classification of neural patterns, the aim is to drastically decrease the problem with long learning times and improve accuracy and reliability. Utilizing and extending a number of state-of-the-art techniques, such as optimal time-frequency representations, Riemann geometry based learning, dual control theory and cognitive modeling combined with edge based cloud computing the intention is to provide an efficient platform for next-generation BCIs, demonstrable within the time span of the project as a consumer-friendly EEG BCI.

The envisioned circular economy is depending on efficient raw materials (re)use without any harmful emissions into the environment. Clean recycling technologies must be developed that are efficient in usage of water, energy, nutrients, and carbon. Bioelectrochemical production system (BES) is an emerging clean technology driven by renewable energy in which CO2 and/or organics are converted and valorized into valuable chemicals. BES uses microorganisms as cheap, robust, and self-repairing catalysts. The task of the PhD candidate is to explore the interface between the electrode material and the biocatalyst (i.e. biofilm), for the production of specific chemicals. Understanding the mechanisms occurring within this interface will allow to enhance the performance of the technology, and gain control over it. The expected outcome is a PhD thesis on the topic. The PhD candidate will also be involved in education activities, as course assistant and as supervisor of BSc/ MSc graduation projects. The Maritime Technology Division (www.maritiem.ugent.be) is a research group within the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Ghent University. Their research is focussing on hydrodynamics of ships and other floating structures in general, and more particularly on the behaviour of ships in confined navigation areas. Additionally, the division is involved in research w.r.t. hydrodynamics of wave energy conversion and, more recently, engineering aspects of aquaculture.

The behaviour of ships in restricted waters (access channels, canals, locks, harbour docks) is the major research topic of the Division. This research, covering the hydrodynamics of seagoing and inland vessels in navigation areas with restrictions in both depth and horizontal extent, is performed in close co-operation with Flanders Hydraulics Research (FHR, Flemish Government, Antwerp) within the Knowledge Centre Manoeuvring in Shallow and Confined Water (www.shallowwater.ugent.be/). This research can be considered as a niche within the field of ship hydrodynamics, as ships are mostly designed for open, deep sea; as a result, most ship hydrodynamics research worldwide is mainly focused on deep water conditions. For this reason, the Knowledge Centre has gained international recognition as one of the leading research groups in ship behaviour in confined waters. Such conditions are of main concern for ships in access channels to ports, harbour areas, docks, locks, berths.
