Postdoctoral researcher in Information Technolgy with focus Data Mining
Halmstad University, School of Information Technology

This two years full-time employment at the School of Information Technology, with a starting date as soon as possible, is linked to the Department of Intelligent Systems and Digital Design, a dynamic research environment with focus on aware intelligent systems.

The subject expertise in the group is machine learning, data mining, signal analysis, mechatronics and digital service innovation. Mining of sensor data streams and medical records, big data analytics, self-monitoring, and deviation detection are examples of areas of particular interest for us. We have a very good track record of doing research in close collaboration with the Swedish industry and public sector. The department has about 30 MSEK annual research budget, with 13-16 PhD students and about 30 researchers with PhDs. The department hosts the Centre for Applied Intelligent Systems Research (CAISR). The PostDoc position is primarily funded by the research project SeMI (Self-Monitoring for Innovation: Meta‑framework for group-based self-monitoring).

The core research question of the SeMI project is “How to construct self‑monitoring systems that use joint-human machine learning to adapt to specific domains, by taking advantage of groups of peers, and ubiquitous streams of data?” In order to answer this question we propose to develop a general meta-framework that can, based on domain-specific input, create tools for group-based self-monitoring for that particular domain. This meta-framework should be capable of learning from streams of data and detecting deviations in an unsupervised fashion, but interactively exploit available expert knowledge in a joint human-machine learning fashion. The unprecedented amount of data accessible today allows ML to focus on more descriptive and explanatory analysis. Users no longer pose well-formulated, concrete questions, but instead require the system to be capable of highlighting interesting aspects such as deviations, anomalies, relations and co-occurrences. We will support continuous learning model, where the training and usage are not easily separated, and the system improves its performance all the time, taking advantage of new data as it arrives.

Postdoctoral position in Cognitive / Affective Neuroscience

For a collaboration between Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany) and Donders Institute in Nijmegen (the Netherlands), we invite applications for a three-year postdoctoral fellow position. This position is funded by an Open Research Area grant from the German Research Foundation and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.

Stressful and emotionally arousing experiences activate hormonal and brain systems that create strong memories. It remains unclear, however, how this strengthening affects the quality of such memories. This project is an interdisciplinary and translational team effort that will conduct human behavioral, pharmacological and neuroimaging studies in combination with mechanistic studies in rodents.

The postdoctoral fellow will perform pharmacological functional-MRI studies involving sophisticated univariate and multivariate analyses of functional neuroimaging data. Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in Primary Care and Population Sciences

In this position you will be part of a team working on a research programme entitled: “Improving adult health in sub-Saharan Africa through couples-focused interventions for HIV, STIs and diabetes.” The team includes Prof. Lucy Yardley (University of Southampton and University of Bristol) and Prof. Sally Wyke (University of Glasgow). Specifically, you will lead on intervention design using logic models and following the Person-Based Approach to intervention development, undertake comprehensive reviews of the literature, conduct qualitative analyses and liaise regularly with South African partners regarding primary data collection.

You will need to be able to work overseas in rural South Africa for visits of approximately 3 weeks, 2-3 times per year, as part of managing project-related activities with the South African teams engaged in primary data collection. The successful candidate will hold a national passport of a country that is exempt from visas for visits to South Africa of up to 90 days per annum (see here). A full driving licence is highly desirable.

The overall programme aims to explore the value of couples-focused behaviour change strategies for health intervention research and practice in sub-Saharan Africa and is run in partnership between the University of Southampton and two South African institutions: Human Sciences Research Council and University of Cape Town. The position is based at Southampton General Hospital within the Public Health Group in the School of Primary Care and Population Sciences, and is funded by a Global Health Professorship award from the National Institute of Health Research.

You will have a PhD in health psychology or a closely related social science discipline that has included training in health behaviour change. You can demonstrate experience of conducting primary data collection including individual interviews and focus groups, and qualitative analysis. You will possess excellent organisational, communication and computing skills, and must have experience of effectively working as part of a team. Experience of working in intervention development with the behaviour change wheel and / or Person-Based approach is highly desirable.

The overall goal of FORMKIN is to develop and apply a matrix analytic model for kinship demography, which will compute the kinship network implied by schedules of mortality and fertility. It will develop this theory at the levels of the individual, the cohort, and the population. International Brain Laboratory postdoctoral position at UCL

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join the International Brain Laboratory in order to probe the links between activity in neural circuits and behaviour.

The project will be co-supervised by Michael Hausser and Matteo Carandini, and involves using ‘Neuropixels’ probes (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/neuropixels) to make massively parallel recordings from large populations of neurons in the brains of awake behaving mice.

The successful applicant will join a thriving international collaboration (http://www.internationalbrainlab.com) which aims to understand the neural circuit basis of decisionmaking in the mouse. Neuropixels recordings will be integrated with other techniques such as two-photon microscopy, two-photon optogenetics, and behavioral paradigms in virtual reality. The post will be based at UCL, but opportunities exist for collaborations with experimental and theoretical colleagues across the 21 labs in 6 countries which comprise the International Brain Laboratory.

The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in all aspects of the project, from designing and performing experiments, developing technical advances, performing data analysis and presenting the results.

PhD Position in Infrastructure Studies+STS at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

The Department of Science & Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) invites applications for an incoming Ph.D. student with interests in the intersections of STS, particularly non-Anglo STS (e.g. Latin American or African STS), and infrastructure studies. The incoming student will receive funding for one year under the supervision of Dr. Raquel Velho, Assistant Professor of Science and Technology Studies. Among the student's responsibilities will be assisting Dr. Velho in her research project on the infrastructural impact of mega-events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games, including the possibility of accompanying her to complete fieldwork in one of many sites (London, Rio de Janeiro, Atlanta). The incoming student will be fully funded for one year, which includes tuition, a stipend for one academic year, and funding for one summer. The WZB Berlin Social Science Center, Research Group “Health and Social Inequality” (headed by Dr. Jan Paul Heisig), invites applications for two positions as Doctoral Researcher (65% of the regular working hours; currently 25.35 hrs/week) for four years, preferably starting in April 2019.

The research group seeks to understand the interplay of social inequalities in health, education, and labor market attainment from a life course perspective, with a strong focus on the emergence of inequalities during childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood.

Particular attention will be paid to the moderating role of public policies and of meso-level contexts such as school environments. These goals will be pursued primarily through theoretically informed quantitative empirical studies using a variety of German and international data sources. Tasks

Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the work of the group through intellectual exchange, the development and implementation of independent and collaborative research projects, the presentation of their work at conferences and workshops, and the publication of results, preferably in peer-reviewed English-language journals. Requirements

Excellent academic credentials (master’s degree or equivalent) in sociology or another social science (public health, education, economics). Good knowledge of theories and current empirical research on social inequalities in at least one domain relevant to the research program of the group (health, education, labor markets) Strong interest in the research agenda of the group and willingness to write a dissertation related to it
Excellent English language skills in speech and writing (knowledge of German is not required)
Remuneration:

Salary group EG 13 TVöD (in accordance with German public service collective agreement).
