The Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (SCAN) Lab at Columbia University (PI: Kevin Ochsner) has an opening for 1-2 postdoctoral researchers, to begin Summer or Fall 2019.

The postdoc will have the opportunity to work on two federally-funded programs of research using combination of fMRI, behavioral and advanced analytic methods to examine the relationships between brain networks, health-relevant affective and social behaviors measured in the lab and in everyday life, and one’s status in real-world social networks.

To fill this position we seek an innovative, accomplished scholar with a PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience or a related field with a strong background in the design and analysis of behavioral and fMRI experiments, skills in computational modeling of behavior, cognition, and brain activity, and excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

A postdoctoral researcher position is available with Prof Hal Caswell, in the Theoretical Ecology Research Group, which is part of the Department of Theoretical and Computational Ecology within the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The Theoretical Ecology Group currently comprises 2 professors, one assistant professor, 1 post-doc, and 4 PhD students. It has active research programs in structured population modelling, resource-consumer interactions, epidemiology, demography, and evolutionary and eco-evolutionary theory.

This postdoctoral position is part of the research program The Formal Demography of Kinship and Family (FORMKIN), which is funded by a European Research Council Advanced Grant to Prof Hal Caswell. The overall goal of FORMKIN is to develop and apply a matrix analytic model for kinship demography, which will compute the kinship network implied by schedules of mortality and fertility. It will develop this theory at the levels of the individual, the cohort, and the population. The models will be applied to comparisons of countries, regions, socioeconomic groups, and historical periods.

International Brain Laboratory postdoctoral position at UCL

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join the International Brain Laboratory in order to probe the links between activity in neural circuits and behaviour.

The project will be co-supervised by Michael Hausser and Matteo Carandini, and involves using ‘Neuropixels’ probes (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/neuropixels) to make massively parallel recordings from large populations of neurons in the brains of awake behaving mice.

The successful applicant will join a thriving international collaboration (http://www.internationalbrainlab.com) which aims to understand the neural circuit basis of decisionmaking in the mouse. Neuropixels recordings will be integrated with other techniques such as two-photon microscopy, two-photon optogenetics, and behavioral paradigms in virtual reality. The post will be based at UCL, but opportunities exist for collaborations with experimental and theoretical colleagues across the 21 labs in 6 countries which comprise the International Brain Laboratory.

The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in all aspects of the project, from designing and performing experiments, developing technical advances, performing data analysis and presenting the results.

The post is funded for 2 years in the first instance and is available immediately.

The Department of Science & Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) invites applications for an incoming Ph.D. student with interests in the intersections of STS, particularly non-Anglo STS (e.g. Latin American or African STS), and infrastructure studies. The incoming student will receive funding for one year under the supervision of Dr. Raquel Velho, Assistant Professor of Science and Technology Studies. Among the student's responsibilities will be assisting Dr. Velho in her research project on the infrastructural impact of mega-events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games, including the possibility of accompanying her to complete fieldwork in one of many sites (London, Rio de Janeiro, Atlanta). The student will also collaborate in the generation of publications and grant applications; mentor the department’s undergraduate students in the Design, Innovation, and Society and Science and Technology Studies majors; and pursue their own independent research.

The incoming student will be fully funded for one year, which includes tuition, a stipend for one academic year, and funding for one summer. There is the possibility for this to be extended, contingent upon funding. The student will also have the opportunity to fund the remainder of their graduate education through internal and external grant funding, Fellowships, or through Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant positions within the Department of Science & Technology Studies which also cover full tuition and offer a competitive stipend.

Doctoral Researcher at WZB

The WZB Berlin Social Science Center, Research Group “Health and Social Inequality” (headed by Dr. Jan Paul Heisig), invites applications for two positions as Doctoral Researcher (65% of the regular working hours; currently 25.35 hrs/week) for four years, preferably starting in April 2019.

The research group seeks to understand the interplay of social inequalities in health, education, and labor market attainment from a life course perspective, with a strong focus on the emergence of inequalities during childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood.

Particular attention will be paid to the moderating role of public policies and of meso-level contexts such as school environments. These goals will be pursued primarily through theoretically informed quantitative empirical studies using a variety of German and international data sources. Tasks

Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the work of the group through intellectual exchange, the development and implementation of independent and collaborative research projects, the presentation of their work at conferences and workshops, and the publication of results, preferably in peer-reviewed English-language journals. The SNSF project “Unifying metamorphism, heat and mechanics for microstructure based snow modeling” hosts 2 PhD sub-projects on the investigation of microstructural processes of snow in view of a unified description of physical properties at the macro-scale.
In the present sub-project, you will be responsible for investigating the interplay of (geometrical) microstructure and macroscopic elasto-visco-plastic material behavior of snow under low strain rates. You will employ microstructure-based mechanical simulations and compare it to existing 4D tomography data that were acquired in time-lapse, micro-compression experiment. You will develop approximations for a microstructure-based constitutive law that meets the requirements of next generation 1D snowpack models.
You hold a Master’s degree in physics or material science (or equivalent). A proven background in mechanics of (complex) materials and experience in numerical simulations are mandatory while additional task-specific qualifications are an advantage. You can demonstrate your competence in written English (e.g. in form of a thesis). Finally, you are expected to be a team player with excellent communication skills for a vivid exchange with the other PhD candidate and for the collaboration with external co-workers in the project.

PhD Position in Enzyme Engineering - enzyme-based biosensors for use in biotechnological applications

Project Description
In the Laboratory for Enzyme Engineering and Evolution, we are interested in questions at the intersection of biochemistry and evolutionary biology. What were the structures, functions and mechanisms of enzymes in the ‘primordial soup’? What mutations are required to change an enzyme with one function into another? And how can we use insights from evolution to design proteins with biomedical and biotechnological applications?

Dr. Wayne Patrick is currently seeking 1-2 enthusiastic and hard-working PhD students to join his group.

In this project, you will design and build enzyme-based biosensors for use in biotechnological (but not biomedical) applications. This project is in collaboration with Molecular Warehouse (http://molecularwarehouse.com/). You will use protein biochemistry, site-directed mutagenesis, protein design and a variety of assay/detection methods.

A background in (and fascination with) protein biochemistry is essential, while experience in biomolecular chemistry, microbiology and/or relevant areas of biotechnology would also be beneficial.

After the 1970s, the Netherlands has gradually emerged as a dominant hub in the international trade of these commodities with links to North and East Africa in particular. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) – the ability of microbes to evolve and resist treatment – is rising globally. In September 2016, the United Nations General Assembly declared AMR “the most urgent global risk”, and mandated its member states to establish national action plans against AMR, including improvements to epidemiological surveillance systems. This position is part of a project funded by the join programming initiative on AMR to improve surveillance in low- and middle-income countries.

We are looking for an enthusiast and quantitatively minded candidate to work on the spatial association between antimicrobial use and resistance in pig farms in Thailand. This is a fixed term position for two 2 years with an anticipated start date on February 1st 2019. The position is based at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. PhD Position with A Research Focus on Image Analysis and Transport Properties in Freeze Drying

The Chair of Process Systems Engineering at Technical University of Munich (location at TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan, Freising) is seeking from Jan 2019 a doctoral research assistant with a focus on image analysis and transport properties of porous materials with regard to freeze drying.

Project
Drying is an important unit operation with the aim of facilitating transport, handling and shelf life. Freeze drying is an expensive drying technology for pharmaceuticals and high-value foods. The efficiency of the freeze drying process is strongly dependent on the pore structure. Therefore, the impact of pore structure on the drying front and kinetics should be investigated. Furthermore, possibilities to influence the pore structure by the freezing process shall be investigated. The pore structure will be analysed by x-Ray computed tomography and image analysis. Based on the pore structure, a pore network model will be developed by our cooperation partner of OVGU Magdeburg. The model will be validated at TUM by measurements with a freeze drying microscope.
Your profile
A qualified candidate has good communication skills, interest in interdisciplinary work and collaboration with the partner as well as a high motivation for image analysis and transport properties in porous media. A degree in chemical/process/food or bioprocess engineering, physics or a similar field with above-average grades is required. Experience in image analysis, freeze drying and transport in porous systems is advantageous.
