The subject expertise in the group is machine learning, data mining, signal analysis, mechatronics and digital service innovation. Mining of sensor data streams, medical records, self-monitoring, and deviation/anomaly detection are examples of areas of particular interest for us. We have a very good track record of doing research in close collaboration with the Swedish industry and public sector. The department has about 30 MSEK annual research budget, with 13-16 PhD students and about 30 researchers with PhDs. The department hosts the Centre for Applied Intelligent Systems Research (CAISR). The PostDoc position is primarily funded by the research project SeMI (Self-Monitoring for Innovation: Meta‑framework for group-based self-monitoring).
The core research question of the SeMI project is “How to construct self‑monitoring systems that use joint-human machine learning to adapt to specific domains, by taking advantage of groups of peers, and ubiquitous streams of data?” In order to answer this question we propose to develop a general meta-framework that can, based on domain-specific input, create tools for group-based self-monitoring for that particular domain. This meta-framework should be capable of learning from streams of data and detecting deviations in an unsupervised fashion, but interactively exploit available expert knowledge in a joint human-machine learning fashion. The unprecedented amount of data accessible today allows ML to focus on more descriptive and explanatory analysis. Users no longer pose well-formulated, concrete questions, but instead require the system to be capable of highlighting interesting aspects such as deviations, anomalies, relations and co-occurrences. We will support continuous learning model, where the training and usage are not easily separated, and the system improves its performance all the time, taking advantage of new data as it arrives.
Principal duties:
The selected candidate will become part of the very dynamic and international research environment at the Center for Applied Intelligent Systems Research (CAISR), at the School of Information Technology. For more information please see: http://caisr.hh.se/ The post as postdoctoral researcher is a qualifying appointment with the purpose to give the employee a possibility to develop its independence as researcher and to obtain merits that can lead to a competence for another post with higher eligibility requirements. As a postdoctoral researcher, you are expected to be active in the research done within the research environment CAISR. The teaching load will be at most 20% of the time working hours. Furthermore, we expect you to take an active part in the continued development of the research environment and that you will take part in applying for research funding from various financiers, both in Sweden and abroad.
Qualification:
The position is intended for someone with a PhD degree in Machine Learning, Data Mining, Signal Processing, AI, or closely related fields. The research track record should demonstrate excellence in research areas such as machine learning and data mining. Strength in computer programming and/or applied mathematics is very welcome.

In an ERC-funded project, we now aim to elucidate the mechanisms of DNA demethylation as well as the role played by long non-coding RNAs and R-loops in its regulation. Eligibility
The applicant must be working toward a Ph.D. in an academic institution. (Please note that the applicant must be accepted in a Ph.D. program.)
No limitations have been placed on citizenship.
Fellowships are only tenable at U.S. and Canadian Universities.
The Award
The award consists of a two-year fellowship of $29,500 per year for two years (total of $59,000) to be used for the Fellow's academic year and summer stipend. Funding for year 2 is not evaluated competitively, but is contingent upon satisfactory progress in year 1.
Charges not considered legitimate (as examples) include: tuition, summer salary or other compensation for the research director, pooled or overhead costs, and salary for support staff (e.g., secretarial or clerical help). It is expected that the Fellow's institution will waive or assume tuition charges, and that the Fellow will be enrolled on a full-time basis for the duration of this award. Fellowships are only tenable at U.S. and Canadian Universities.
The Award
The award consists of a two-year fellowship of $29,500 per year for two years (total of $59,000) to be used for the Fellow's academic year and summer stipend. Funding for year 2 is not evaluated competitively, but is contingent upon satisfactory progress in year 1.
Charges not considered legitimate (as examples) include: tuition, summer salary or other compensation for the research director, pooled or overhead costs, and salary for support staff (e.g., secretarial or clerical help). It is expected that the Fellow's institution will waive or assume tuition charges, and that the Fellow will be enrolled on a full-time basis for the duration of this award. In this position you will be part of a team working on a research programme entitled: “Improving adult health in sub-Saharan Africa through couples-focused interventions for HIV, STIs and diabetes.” The team includes Prof. Lucy Yardley (University of Southampton and University of Bristol) and Prof. Sally Wyke (University of Glasgow). Specifically, you will lead on intervention design using logic models and following the Person-Based Approach to intervention development, undertake comprehensive reviews of the literature, conduct qualitative analyses and liaise regularly with South African partners regarding primary data collection.
You will need to be able to work overseas in rural South Africa for visits of approximately 3 weeks, 2-3 times per year, as part of managing project-related activities with the South African teams engaged in primary data collection. The successful candidate will hold a national passport of a country that is exempt from visas for visits to South Africa of up to 90 days per annum (see here). A full driving licence is highly desirable.
The overall programme aims to explore the value of couples-focused behaviour change strategies for health intervention research and practice in sub-Saharan Africa and is run in partnership between the University of Southampton and two South African institutions: Human Sciences Research Council and University of Cape Town. The position is based at Southampton General Hospital within the Public Health Group in the School of Primary Care and Population Sciences, and is funded by a Global Health Professorship award from the National Institute of Health Research.
You will have a PhD in health psychology or a closely related social science discipline that has included training in health behaviour change. You can demonstrate experience of conducting primary data collection including individual interviews and focus groups, and qualitative analysis. You will possess excellent organisational, communication and computing skills, and must have experience of effectively working as part of a team. Experience of working in intervention development with the behaviour change wheel and / or Person-Based approach is highly desirable.

In this position you will be part of a team working on a research programme entitled: “Improving adult health in sub-Saharan Africa through couples-focused interventions for HIV, STIs and diabetes.” The team includes Prof. Lucy Yardley (University of Southampton and University of Bristol) and Prof. Sally Wyke (University of Glasgow). Specifically, you will lead on intervention design using logic models and following the Person-Based Approach to intervention development, undertake comprehensive reviews of the literature, conduct qualitative analyses and liaise regularly with South African partners regarding primary data collection.
You will need to be able to work overseas in rural South Africa for visits of approximately 3 weeks, 2-3 times per year, as part of managing project-related activities with the South African teams engaged in primary data collection. The successful candidate will hold a national passport of a country that is exempt from visas for visits to South Africa of up to 90 days per annum (see here). A full driving licence is highly desirable.
The overall programme aims to explore the value of couples-focused behaviour change strategies for health intervention research and practice in sub-Saharan Africa and is run in partnership between the University of Southampton and two South African institutions: Human Sciences Research Council and University of Cape Town. The position is based at Southampton General Hospital within the Public Health Group in the School of Primary Care and Population Sciences, and is funded by a Global Health Professorship award from the National Institute of Health Research.
You will have a PhD in health psychology or a closely related social science discipline that has included training in health behaviour change. You can demonstrate experience of conducting primary data collection including individual interviews and focus groups, and qualitative analysis. You will possess excellent organisational, communication and computing skills, and must have experience of effectively working as part of a team. Experience of working in intervention development with the behaviour change wheel and / or Person-Based approach is highly desirable.
Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
