Postdoc in auditory thalamocortical system modeling & data analysis
A computational neuroscience postdoctoral position is available at the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research under the auspices of a NIH R01 (MPI: Peter Lakatos, Sam Neymotin).
The aim of our project is to develop/utilize computer models of the auditory thalamocortical system to investigate mechanisms and functions of neuronal oscillatory patterns observed in the auditory system in the electrophysiological recordings from Dr. Lakatos' group. The broad goal is to develop a biologically-realistic data-driven computer model of the thalamocortical auditory system that is able to support critical auditory information processing features, with special emphasis on neuronal oscillations. The combined in vivo and in silico results of our project will pave the way for model-driven neuromodulation, offering precise predictions on how to efficiently control biological circuits. Besides modeling,our group also focuses heavily on developing and applying novel signal processing techniques for the analysis of electrophysiological data on multiple spatial scales, from single neurons to ECoG recordings.
Applicants should have a strong background in: computer programming, with demonstrated proficiency in Python and Matlab, analysis of electrophysiological data, development of signal processing methods for neural data, detailed computational modeling of neurons/neuronal circuits using NEURON with Python.

Helicobacter pylori (HP) bacteria is a major cause of stomach cancer and is easily curable with early detection. However, existing diagnostic tests in developing countries are invasive and costly. Further, infrastructural challenges in developing countries make access to detection and prevention impossible for most.
The Open University developed a novel diagnostic breath analysis tool with Oxford Micromedical Ltd, to non-invasively test for HP and in partnership with Tech Mahindra, this tool will be rolled out in India in 2020. This studentship will support doctoral research to study challenges, opportunities and potential solutions associated with adoption of breath analyser tool in the healthcare system of developing countries. It will further contribute to development of a model for inclusive health through engagement with all the stakeholders involved, ranging from patients, health workers, clinicians, funders and policymakers.

Inclusive Health: Use of Breath Diagnostics for cancer detection in Rural & Urban India
Multiple Postdocs available in the Neurobiology of Language
Multiple Postdoctoral research positions are available in the Tandon Lab at The University of Texas in Houston as part of the newly formed Texas Epilepsy Neurotechnologies and Neuroinformatics (TENN) Institute. Positions are funded either via multi year Institute funding or by NIH funds (an R01 and a U01). The lab uses multimodal approaches – fMRI, lesional analysis following epilepsy surgery, intracranial recordings and direct stimulation to create validate network level representations of language. Lab Collaborators include Greg Hickok (UCI), Stanislas Dehaene (NeuroSpin), Nathan Crone (JHU), Simon Fisher Baum (Rice) and Xaq Pitkow (Rice-Baylor); the post-doc will benefit from a close interaction with these experts in the fields of reading, semantics, speech production and computational neuroscience.
The selected individual must have a Ph.D. in one or more of the following: neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, mathematics, electrical engineering or computer science. Previous experience in neural time series data analysis, functional imaging studies of language, or studies of speech production are desirable – but not crucial. They must possess the ability to independently code in any or all of the following: MATLAB, R or python.
They are expected to be highly motivated, team players with a passion to study cognitive processes using any or all of the various modalities available in the lab - imaging, direct recordings and closed-loop cortical stimulation in humans. Given the multiple unpredictable variables and privacy issues around data collection in human patients, the individual must possess high ethical and professional standards and be adaptable. A strong publication record and excellent academic credentials are highly desirable.

Multiple Postdoctoral research positions are available in the Tandon Lab at The University of Texas in Houston as part of the newly formed Texas Epilepsy Neurotechnologies and Neuroinformatics (TENN) Institute. Positions are funded either via multi year Institute funding or by NIH funds (an R01 and a U01). The lab uses multimodal approaches – fMRI, lesional analysis following epilepsy surgery, intracranial recordings and direct stimulation to create validate network level representations of language. Lab Collaborators include Greg Hickok (UCI), Stanislas Dehaene (NeuroSpin), Nathan Crone (JHU), Simon Fisher Baum (Rice) and Xaq Pitkow (Rice-Baylor); the post-doc will benefit from a close interaction with these experts in the fields of reading, semantics, speech production and computational neuroscience.
The selected individual must have a Ph.D. in one or more of the following: neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, mathematics, electrical engineering or computer science. Previous experience in neural time series data analysis, functional imaging studies of language, or studies of speech production are desirable – but not crucial. They must possess the ability to independently code in any or all of the following: MATLAB, R or python.
They are expected to be highly motivated, team players with a passion to study cognitive processes using any or all of the various modalities available in the lab - imaging, direct recordings and closed-loop cortical stimulation in humans. Given the multiple unpredictable variables and privacy issues around data collection in human patients, the individual must possess high ethical and professional standards and be adaptable. Funded PhD about Nepal flood hazards at Durham University
We invite applicants for a fully-funded PhD project “Modelling and Mapping Flood Hazards in Data Poor Environments: the case of Nepal” led by Dr Sim. M. Reaney, Department of Geography, Durham University, United Kingdom.
Scientific context: Flood hazards in Nepal have resulted in significant regional impacts in recent years. One widely employed method of risk reduction is the use of insurance to cover the losses incurred. In data poor regions such as Nepal, there has not been the information required to develop the detailed models required to price insurance. Recent innovations in remote sensing and simulation modelling have the potential to enable quantitative approaches to be used in these areas. The project model and map the spatial pattern of flood hazards and at the end of the research project, there will be the understanding to recommend spatial flood hazard mapping methods for Nepal. This information will be integrated into future work on providing flood insurance to the at-risk communities in Nepal and beyond.
Doctoral Training: The student will receive training in GIS risk mapping, remote sensing and hydrological simulation modelling. The student will also be enrolled in a graduate training programme at Durham University, gaining transferable skills, including writing research proposals and giving oral presentations. They will attend national and international conferences (e.g. AGU), networking events and outreach activities, developing networks for feedback and future employment.The Department of Geography was ranked 1st in the United Kingdom based on Research Power (REF 2014) and has a large and vibrant postgraduate community, with regular departmental seminars and paper discussion groups. Healthy brain function is mediated by the coordination of neuronal activity - both locally and across different brain regions - giving rise to large-scale brain dynamics. These dynamics are measured using a variety of techniques, for example magneto-/electro-encephalography or functional MRI in humans, or by fluorescence-based imaging of voltage- or calcium-sensitive indicators in animal models in vivo. Uncovering the nature and mechanisms of large-scale brain dynamics at rest, or during sensory processing, remains a fundamental challenge in neuroscience. In addition to basic insight, improving our understanding of healthy brain dynamics will help us elucidate reasons why abnormal dynamics occur, for example in neurological or neuropsychiatric disorders.
This studentship will develop a novel program of interdisciplinary research across in vivo (mouse) experimentation and mathematical modelling. The overall aim is to construct and validate mathematical models of large-scale brain dynamics that are able to explain the spontaneous activity of the rodent brain in vivo. The student will train in optogenetic technologies and in vivo imaging, as well as mathematical model development, multi-variate time series analysis and parameter fitting tools, thus placing them at the forefront of interdisciplinary neuroscience. In a first step, targeted optogenetic stimuli will be combined with voltage sensitive dye imaging in awake mice to probe the response of brain tissue to excitatory and inhibitory afferent stimuli. Neural mass models will be fit to these data, using machine learning approaches (for example random forests). This information will be compiled into a predictive model of cortical dynamics and tested against experimental recordings of spontaneous activity.
The studentship is part of a joint program between The University of Exeter (UoE) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. They are offering six fully funded postgraduate studentships to undertake collaborative research projects at the two institutions, leading to PhD degrees (split-site) to be conferred either by the UoE or NTU. Students pursuing these postgraduate research projects will benefit from the unique opportunity to conduct their research at both institutions. Students will be registered at one or other institution, where they will be based for the majority of their time, but will spend at least 12 and not more than 18 months at the partner institution over the duration of the programme. The frequency and length of stays at each institution will be agreed with successful candidates prior to offers being made.
All six projects are advertised concurrently at both institutions and three will be allocated to each institution after the deadline has passed, based on a collaborative decision made between the UoE and NTU. The final decision on the successful applicant for each project will be made by the institution hosting the project. Project allocation will be based on the applicant’s best fit to a project, following a review of applications submitted to each institution. In particular, fellows will help conduct randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and studies of the neural mechanisms of behavioral treatments for opioid misuse, including research on Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE), an intervention for addiction, stress-related conditions, and chronic pain. The Brain Mechanisms of Pain and Health Laboratory in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral position (s) to join Dr. Zeidan’s Laboratory.
Our research focuses on the mechanisms supporting the cognitive construction and modulation of pain and health. We are particularly interested in the role of mindfulness, placebo and other behavioral approaches on pain relief employing multimodal methodologies including psychophysics, neuroimaging, pharmacology and psychology. We are currently conducting NIH-sponsored studies in healthy humans and chronic pain patients.
Preferred candidates will have a strong background in functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), clinical psychology, computer programming, and strong interpersonal skills.
Appointments and salary are commensurate with research experience and accomplishments following current UCSD guidelines.

BioSS has an international reputation in the field of statistics and mathematics applied in the biological sciences. It contributes research, consultancy and training to agricultural, environmental and biological research organisations in Scotland and plays a leading role in collaborative research programmes with UK universities. With some 30 statistics, mathematics and computing specialists and 10 postgraduate research students, BioSS is one of the leading European groups in its field. Approximately half of the BioSS staff are based in our headquarters on the King's Buildings campus of Edinburgh University and the remainder are located in four BioSS units at research institutes in Aberdeen, Ayr and Dundee. We seek a scientist with a strong quantitative background to undertake methodological research in statistical genomics and bioinformatics in collaboration with biological scientists. The aim is to develop and apply computationally intensive modelling and analysis methods to exploit the potential of existing and emerging types of data in genomics and meta-genomics, proteomics and metabolomics.
This is a joint post between Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland (65%) and the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh (35%). We offer a stimulating working environment (located in adjacent accommodation within the James Clerk Maxwell Building at the King's Buildings campus with a shared common room and excellent facilities) and extensive opportunities to develop collaborations with scientists in both the research institute and university sectors.
In addition to the pursuit of independent quantitative research, the successful applicant will lead the Statistical Genomics and Bioinformatics research theme in BioSS, engage in knowledge transfer activities including postgraduate supervision, and deliver and develop teaching at all levels.
The post-holder will have separate, but mutually dependent, contracts with each employing organisation.
