One fMRI MVPA Post-Doc (very competitive salary) 5 year position available under an ERC Starting Grant on the organization of object knowledge

The Proaction Laboratory (Perception and Recognition of Objects and Actions;http://gaius.fpce.uc.pt/pessoais/jorgealmeida/proaction_home.html; Jorge Almeida’s Lab) at the University of Coimbra (www.uc.pt), Portugal is looking for a motivated and bright Post-doctoral researcher to work on an ERC Starting Grant project (ContentMAP) on the neural organization of object knowledge. In this project we will explore how complex information is topographically organized in the brain using fMRI and state of the art analytical techniques, as well as computational approaches, and neuromodulation.

Excellent understanding of and experience with fMRI and data analysis is required. Strong programming skills (matlab, python, etc.) are also a requirement. Experience with data analysis techniques using MVPA and other multivariate approaches (e.g., Representation Similarity Analysis). Very good English (oral and written) communicative skills are necessary.

The position is for a maximum of 5 years, and will start in February 2019. The position involves no formal teaching (unless the candidate wants to). It does involve, however, lab mentoring.

The salary is extremely competitive – between 2200 and 2400 euros per month (dependent on experience), tax free (annual 26400-28800 euros tax free). This value is on par with the average salaries at top American institutions, as well as London, Paris, etc. However, the cost of living in Portugal (and particularly in Coimbra) is much lower. According to Numbeo, 2400 euros would be equivalent to 4850 pounds in London/4800 euros in Paris/6615 USD in Boston/6210 USD in Los Angeles/ 8330 USD in New York).

The researcher will work directly with Jorge Almeida in Coimbra, but the laboratory has extensive collaborations with researchers throughout the world. In fact, there may be the option of spending some time in another lab as part of the position. The researcher will also be encouraged to develop her/his own projects and look for additional funding so that the stay can be extended.

We have access to a 3T MRI scanner with a 32-channel coil (with EEG inside the scanner), to tDCS with neuronavigation, and to a fully set psychophysics lab. We have EEG and eyetracking on site. We also have access, through other collaborations, to a 7T scanner. Finally, the University of Coimbra is a 700 year old University and has been selected as a UNESCO world Heritage site. Coimbra is one of the most lively university cities in the world, and it is a beautiful city with easy access to the beach and mountain.

The GWIS National Fellowships Program is proud to offer fellowships in 2019 to help increase knowledge in the natural sciences and to encourage research careers in the sciences by women. Endowment funds, mostly generated from bequests, provide the annual income that supports scientific research done by GWIS award winners. For the 2018-2019 funding cycle, we distributed approximately $50,000 in fellowships funds to five deserving women scientists.



The Fellowships are known as the Sigma Delta Epsilon (SDE), Eloise Gerry, Ethel K. Allen, Vessa Notchev, Jean Langenheim, Monique Braude, Nell I. Postdoc position in Neural Machine Translation (CIS, LMU Munich)

I am expanding my research group, which is located at the Center for Information and Language Processing at the University of Munich (LMU).

This is a postdoc level position and it currently has one year of full-time funding from my ERC Starting Grant.

Candidates will focus on cutting edge research into using deep learning techniques to solve machine translation (neural machine translation). The group is a well-known machine translation research group with strong interests in related natural language problems. The working language of the group is English, no knowledge of German is required. The three main focuses of the group are in neural machine translation: 1) domain adaptation 2) adding linguistic information to character NMT 3) unsupervised NMT.

Candidates will have possibilities to teach, supervise bachelors/masters students, and to collaborate on grant applications.

CIS has an active community working on cutting-edge natural language processing. There will be significant interaction with the research groups of Hinrich Schütze (deep learning and a variety of NLP problems) and Helmut Schmid (neural machine translation, parsing, tagging, morphology). We also have several active collaborations with colleagues at other universities.

The University of Munich is one of the top research universities in Europe. It was the highest ranked institution on several measures in the Exzellenzinitiative funding program organized by the German national science foundation in 2012.

Dear colleagues,

I am looking for a PhD student staring at Boston University in Fall 2019.

I currently have two projects:

In the first project we will determine whether the Mississippi delta is able to survive sea level rise. We will use the model Delft3D coupled to new remote sensing data collected by NASA. The second project explores the conversion of coastal forests to salt marsh triggered by sea level rise. Together with a group of ecologists from different universities, we will carry out a large scale experiment by cutting pine trees near the marsh boundary at the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER ( https://www.vcrlter.virginia.edu/home2/ ). The goal is to determine whether removal of trees will trigger an ecological shift to salt marsh vegetation. Our group is in charge of the hydrological component: we will install a suite of instruments to measure groundwater level and salinity, soil moisture, precipitation, light availability, etc., for 5-10 years.

Current percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) catheters are highly sophisticated tools in the field of cardiovascular technologies. To tackle these challenges, it is the goal to develop a new catheter design and investigate on new production methods within the next three years. Research Fellow in Demography & Health at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

An exciting opportunity is available for an ambitious demographer, statistician, or epidemiologist with the Network for Analysing Longitudinal Population-based HIV data on Africa (ALPHA Network). The ALPHA network brings together ten collaborating African research institutes that conduct population-based HIV surveillance in eastern and southern Africa and is coordinated by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Among others, the ALPHA Network harmonizes diverse data sets into a common format so as to conduct comparative studies and meta-analyses on pooled data sets.



The Research Fellow in Demography & Health will join a team of analysts in London to work on a 3-year research project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to estimate HIV incidence and mortality, and in the comparison of population-based estimates with those emanating from routinely collected data in health facilities.

The successful applicant must have a PhD in the relevant subject, including demography, medical statistics, epidemiology, or reproductive health (or equivalent working experience in these fields); expertise in the analysis of large and complex (longitudinal) datasets; proven ability to use statistical analysis software (preferably Stata or R); and strong quantitative skills, preferably in the area of demographic estimation. This full-time position is available as soon as possible for the duration of one year, with the possibility of further extension. It will be based in London in the Faculty of EPH and in the Department of Population Health, at Keppel Street, Bloomsbury. The NLP/ML group in the Dept of Computing at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia is recruiting a post-doctoral researcher for a joint research project "Information Extraction and Parsing Methods for Government and Enterprise Applications" on information and relation extraction involving Macquarie University, CSIRO's Data61 and the University of Edinburgh. The project uses syntactic parsing and deep learning to extract "who did what to whom when" from a large corpus of texts. The research involves integrating information extracted from multiple texts and using this information in creative ways, e.g., building event time-lines for individuals, learning entailments between predicates and relations, etc.

The post-doc will report to Professor Mark Johnson in the Department of Computing, Macquarie University and Dr Stephen Wan of CSIRO's Data61, Marsfield, and will be collaborating with Professor Mark Steedman of Edinburgh University.

Postdoctoral fellowship (2 years) in Marine Ecology: Carbon cycling in Arctic benthos

A two-year postdoc fellowship in Marin Ecology: Carbon cycling in Arctic benthos is available at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University (Bodø, Norway) from March 1th, 2019.

FBA invites applications from outstanding candidates for a two-year Post-doctoral position within a research project on carbon cycling in Arctic benthic ecosystems. The position is affiliated with the Research Group Ecology and the successful candidate will join the Benthos Ecology research unit.

A significant portion of the position involves studying carbon cycling pathways in Arctic marine benthic communities in conjunction with the Nansen Legacy project. The candidate will design and conduct benthic-process experiments during a series of research cruises in 2019-2020 in collaboration with Akvaplan-Niva and other project partners. The postdoc is supposed to contribute to the planning and design of the field studies.

The post-doc project aims to improve the knowledge of carbon and nutrient cycling through the food web of arctic communities in the northern Barents Sea and adjacent slope, which is the study area of this project. Here, climate change effects were observed and predicted to occur rapidly, while the biological consequences are poorly understood. In collaboration with the Nansen legacy project we will focus on how climate change might affect the seasonal cycles and in consequence the linked biological processes in the northern Barents Sea.

The candidate is expected to work independently in an international and interdisciplinary project team and will supervise master and PhD students.

A Postdoctoral position in machine learning and computational single-cell genomics is available in the Statistical Genomics and Systems Genetics group at our laboratory in the Genome Biology Unit at EMBL Heidelberg in Germany. Our research group is relocating from Cambridge to Heidelberg, where we bridge the excellence in molecular biology and biotechnology at EMBL Heidelberg with disease models and access to large biomedical datasets at the German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg. The position is funded via the recently awarded BMBF project MechML, which we are coordinating.The position will be jointly located at EMBL Heidelberg and DKFZ.

PETRA III, one of the most brilliant hard X-ray facilities worldwide, currently provides 20 undulator beamlines for experiments utilizing the extreme source brilliance. The 'Bioimaging and Diffraction Beamline P11' provides extremely high flux denisities allowing for ultra fast 3D structure determination of biological samples. We are seeking two highly motivated scientists (f/m/diverse) to enhance our macromolecular crystallography research team at this state-of-the-art beamline.
