This postdoctoral position is part of the research program The Formal Demography of Kinship and Family (FORMKIN), which is funded by a European Research Council Advanced Grant to Prof Hal Caswell. The overall goal of FORMKIN is to develop and apply a matrix analytic model for kinship demography, which will compute the kinship network implied by schedules of mortality and fertility. It will develop this theory at the levels of the individual, the cohort, and the population. The models will be applied to comparisons of countries, regions, socioeconomic groups, and historical periods.
This postdoctoral project will focus on applications of the models to human demographic data, from as wide an array of sources as possible (including, but not limited to, databases, surveys, censuses, register data, and models), to explore both familiar questions, and develop new ones, in family demography. You will be responsible for identifying sources of data, developing substantive research questions, and carrying out analyses.

Conducting interviews at SFN for a Brown University Human Imaging & Computational Neuroscience Position
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the lab of Dr. Stephanie Jones at Brown University. Our group combines human electrophysiological recordings and computational neural modeling techniques to study the mechanisms and meaning of brain dynamics in health in disease. We collaborate extensively with animal electrophysiologists and clinicians to develop data constrained models that are translationally relevant. We are expanding our research efforts to including non-invasive brain stimulation. A postdoctoral position is available to integrate simultaneous human EEG and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in humans, with computational neural modeling developments. The postdoctoral researcher will help expand our new software tool Human Neocortical Neurosolver (https://hnn.brown.edu) for circuit level interpretation of EEG/MEG signals to include TMS studies. She/he will also help with the design, implementation and analysis of our TMS/EEG experiments.
Candidates should have a PhD in neuroscience, computational neuroscience, computer science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, and/or related field. Strong quantitative and programming skills are required. The ideal candidate would have experience in computational neuroscience methods applied to human EEG and brain stimulation data. However, experience in all areas is not required. Candidates should be able to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary and fun work environment.

The Neural Decoding and Data Analytics Lab at the Center for Bioelectronic Medicine, headed by Assistant Professor Theo Zanos PhD, focuses on neural recordings and data analysis methods to gain insights into decoding and encoding mechanisms of the brain and peripheral nerves to and from stimuli, actions and other physiological functions. The lab utilizes a variety of techniques from signal processing, machine learning, optimization, neurophysiology and bioelectronic systems for closed-loop neural recording and stimulation, both in health and in disease models. The ultimate goal is to develop neuromodulation therapies that will observe the state of the organism and the organ system that is targeted, to deliver individualized treatment of diseases in real-time.
The successful candidate will develop or deploy computational tools, will take part in neurophysiology experiments and collect data, organize and analyze data, collaborate with other research staff and publish and present data in a timely manner. They will also work collaboratively with other investigators to facilitate their scientific research and training. Furthermore, they will participate in various types of institute and community activities and may apply for grant funding and/or patents as appropriate. The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers, contributing to the development of next-generation 3D digitization and machine learning approaches applied to the Cultural Heritage (CH) and Digital Humanities (DH) domain.
Required qualifications:
•A Ph.D. in computer science or related field (with specialization in either computer vision, information retrieval or machine learning);
•Proficiency in programming languages, in particular, Python, C/C++, and MATLAB;

Students will be able to work with neuroscience faculty at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH and Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman, MT on a collaborative project funded by a multi-site (Dartmouth, Brown, Montana State and the University of Nevada at Reno) NSF EPSCoR award to study the neural bases of visual attention. PhD Student (100 %, 3 years)
You will be working in projects (e.g. SNF-founded) on improving human decision-making in areas such as nutrition, energy and politics with, for example, the help of visualizations.
Areas of responsibility will include:
planning, programming (Matlab and / or Unipark) and conducting experiments
literature research
data analysis (SPSS, R)
writing scientific publications (incl. PhD-thesis)
presenting at conferences
administrative duties
We are looking for a person with a university degree in psychology (MSc or comparable degree) and a strong affinity for cognitive science (attention, perception, decision-making, etc.) as well as research methods and statistics. Additionally, a good knowledge of English is requested. We also accept applications from native English-speaking persons or students from abroad. Last, but not least, we are looking for a team-player, who can also work independently and has profound IT user knowledge (strong demand of all office applications).
